Description

Looking at this man he looks about a few inches shy of six feet, maybe five n
nothing noticeably special about him. Unruly black hair is cut not too long,
not too short, somewhere just below the ears. It seems like it tends to curl
when it gets long as you see the beginnings of a wave around the sides and at
the front. He is garbed as any common man of modest means might be, with
serviceable items showing some wear but without any obvious rips or tears.
The eyes have a bit of a sparkle to them, and wrinkles around the mouth and
eyes attest to a ready grin you think you might almost see growing just now.
All in all he seems like someone you've seen before but don't quite recognize
and with a final look at him you are quite sure that

Chapter 1

Finding a path for life

I think the worst two words in the common tongue must be if only.
If only this or if only that, the difference between what is and
what might have been, or worse, what might be. Sometimes it's about
what could have happened, sometimes about something you did but should
not have, or, of course, sometimes it's something you should have done
but didn't. No matter how things come to pass though, what makes a
man is how he lives his life, and what he does with himself, because
of or in spite of what might have been. For Marty, the idea that has
been percolating in his head for a long time now is if only he had been
able to save Jenny, the love of his life. But he could not, and nothing
he could ever do could change that. At first her death to the bandits
sent him into a spiral of despair and self-recrimination. He was a
dilettante, studying this and that, a happy go lucky young man without
much care for anything serious or focused. If only he had studied harder,
if only he had focused on something that could have been of use to Jenny,
if only he had been pure enough of spirit, of soul, of mind, to be able
to discipline himself rather than waste his potential. It took months,
almost two full years, before the care and love of his family brought him
out and restored him to his former self. Though not entirely. His ready
smile and light manner had returned, but no longer was he unsure of his
path in life, or unable to restrain his mind and soul from wandering. He
now had a purpose, and one that would walk with him for all his life. He
would continue his studies, arduous and lengthly though they might be, and
he would put his learning to good use. Ridding the lands of those like the
bandits who had taken his young life's love would be a fitting way to honor
Jenny's memory, and a worthy goal to pursue. Always a thought of her will
bring a smile to his face, and though the goal is important, living life is
also to be cherished. He will fight, and he will fight as well as he can, but
he will never forget that he is a regular man from a regular family in a
regular village, and the daily gifts of the light are to be embraced, so
as to provide strength when knee-deep in the blood of those that would bring
death to young women, like Jenny.
