Kyraea the Legend of the Battlefield

Description

She peeks out behind long dirty blonde bangs. An statuesque elf of exquisite
poise and beauty is here before you. Her hair falls in cascades of waves and
half-curls just slightly beneath her shoulders. Her green eyes are large and
expressive, showing much hurt and pain, but also quiet strength and
determination. The majority of what she wears looks to be light leathers and
furs. Her deft hands grasp the hilts of her weapons sheathed in her belt. Her
skin is flawless, the color of pale ivory. She handles herself well and seems
light on her feet. Judging by her armor and demeanor, you surmise that she is
a warrior. She stands about six and a half feet tall, but looks thin enough
to walk upon the branch of a sapling without bending it.

The Letter and Darkness
Added Tue May 1 19:27:55 2007 at level 50:

Minds are mysterious, funny, and powerful things, and of all the races of
Thera, the mind of an elf is something to fear in awe. Kyraea had enjoyed the
longevity of her elven ancestry thus far. When she was born into new memory,
leaving her past behind in Darsylon the first time and entered the academy,
she could not remember her true age, so told the most approximate guess of
what she thought it could be. This was the first sign that not all was well
within her mind. Elves are not known for forgetting. When she took leave of
the Fortress long enough to seek out an apothecary to forget even more of her
life, she took another dark and dangerous step down a path where light was
uncertain to exist. She was a new woman certainly, but moreso than she could
have imagined.

"I take my rest. Fight well for the Light," Kyraea said to her fellow Maran
and Acolytes. Hanging up her armor and most of her weapons, she put on her
civilian clothes, hid a dagger beneath her cloak, and set out for Voralian.
She had much to think on during her time away from adventuring. Not all was
well with her memory lately. She had let go of her past and become a better
warrior. While adventuring, she could remember all manner of things about her
enemies' habits so that she could predict every one of their moves. When the
adrenaline faded and she hung up her armor, though, she lost all knowledge of
how they fought. It seemed very odd to her. There were also times when she'd
leave and look down at the dagger in her hand without having any clue as to
how to use it. When the knowledge returned to her, she felt both relieved and
a little scared. What if this happened during a battle? The ramifications
could not only mean her death, but the deaths of those around her as well.
Letting down her companions was NOT an option. She would have to guard her
mental faculties to her fullest abilities. But the greatest horror she had
faced in recent times were the blackouts. She could remember leaving the
Fortress sometimes dressed in her civilian clothes and then everything would
go dark. She would wake up in different places wearing different clothes and
sometimes with the scent of death on her. For the most part, she kept these
difficulties to herself. If the others of the Fortress knew about he
blackouts, could they depend on her any longer? Would she be allowed to fight
alongside them? Thus far, while adventuring, no such occurrence has happened,
and until it did, she didn't feel it was wise to share the information.

Then one day, she received a letter. She opened it before really looking at
it, assuming that it was delivered correctly. Unfolding the paper, the
writing read:

Llylithia,

I assume by now that you have observed all of Kyraea's movements.
If you don't know them by heart then perhaps you haven't the abilities
you boast of. If you do know them all, then why haven't you struck
and ended her pathetic life? She is only an elf and they are all weak.
Though I know their blood runs in your veins, I am certain you can
be different. With her out of the way, you should be able to penetrate
the Fortress and bring it down from within. The boss says that he has a
guild full of heartless mercenaries ready and waiting to swarm and loot
the place. He says its going to make the finest

A New Woman, A Forgotten Past
Added Sat Apr 28 19:29:38 2007 at level 49:

Kyraea yearned for the feel of the grass of the valley beneath her feet. She
had been away from Darsylon for years now and her homesickness almost became
a serious physical malady. Yet, she knew that as much as she loved her home,
she could never go back without being sure the forget spell would not rob her
of her prowess again. Every elf she met in her adventures, she inquired about
the news of her home. Would it be so sinful to be in the land she loved?
Could she be blamed for wanting to return over wanting to help protect?

The inner turmoil raged on. For every reason she could think of to head home,
there was a more pressing reason to stay away. It was because she loved
Darsylon so much that she could not return. She knew this. It was more than
mere sadness building inside her and gnawing away at her emotions, it was
melancholy. How could anyone understand the paradox of virtue she tried to
embody? It was pride and joy and love that made her leave so that she could
become strong enough again to protect her people from afar. Yet, it was a
morose pall upon her soul that she had to leave and could not come back.

The sadness that became a part of her affected her duty in many overt ways.
While she had remastered two of the weapons that she once swung with deadly
aplomb, the melancholy had kept her from reaching her full potential again.
Many dark creatures fell beneath her axes and daggers, but she could claim no
victory over any of the adventuring guilds. Her judgment was affected as
well. While wiser tacticians might have retreated, she stayed on in battle,
despairing and hoping for triumph. This proved to be her downfall many times
as she fell again and again. The Empire and the Scions with their
wicked-hearted creatures had indeed plucked her life strings numerous times,
but Kyraea's greatest enemy was herself.

How could she have lost what was so important to her? The love of combat, the
desire to protect the home she loved and uphold the light, the duty she swore
all seemed to lag behind her overwhelming sadness. Her outsides started to
become more of a husk of an elf, worn down by time and despair. She found
herself trying to exude an emotionless exterior to hide the pain within, but
she felt that it would bubble forth any moment. There had to be some sort of
solution...

The answer came one rainy day when she roamed the Fortress in a barely-hidden
foul temper. She was frustrated with herself for her inability to retrieve
the Orb from the Empire. For a split second during her brooding, she wished
she were still back in Darsylon, blissfully unaware of danger, forgetting all
she knew of combat. Then it struck her... why could she not forget of
Darsylon? If she forgot she had ever been in Darsylon or what it was and
focused only on duty, then perhaps the sadness would abate. She decided she
could no longer go on living the way she did and it was time for action.

Seeking an apothecary who was familiar with the benign versions of the spell
and incorporating it into potions, Kyraea found a man in Hamsah who could
help her. An old desert hermit, he gave her what she needed with no questions
asked. Seeking solitude, she traveled up the mountains and faced the
direction Darsylon was in. She focused on what she wanted to forget and

Through Dreams, We are Stirred to Action
Added Fri Apr 6 22:21:45 2007 at level 4:

The orcish hordes allied with trolls and ogres under the leadership of a
cruel and dastardly chief. The advanced forces sent to fight them never came
back. As the valley began to flood with foul creatures, the elves ran toward
the upper branches of the great trees near the palace for safety. Skirmishes
were fought, but the hordes made their way to the palace and sieged it. Only
in the nick of time did dwarven and human allies arrive to beat back the
orcs, trolls, and ogres. While Kyraea survived, her family did not. She
returned to her home, utterly distraught, stressed out from the recent war
and the death of her family. She cried for seven days straight, never
sleeping. The loss was unbearable, but moreso was the knowledge that she once
could have done something to have prevented it.

When she finally slept on the eighth day, nightmares plagued her all
throughout the night. At first they were vague and shapeless so that she
couldn't recall them upon waking. After several more nights, they began to
take vivid, terrifying form.

She was her noble self again, she had finally regained her position and rank.
It was the night of a great celebration in the palace, but something seemed
wrong. As the other nobles danced, fire rose up outside the palace windows.
Kyraea began to panic, but no one else seemed bothered to stop dancing and
laughing. She ran to a window to see the source of the fire. It felt so hot!
As she turned around to look at the guests, they had all become orcs, each in
elven attire and dancing merrily about. She dropped to her knees in despair
and it was then the orcs noticed her. They started shuffling towards her and
surrounding her. Their arms began to stretch towards her panicked form. Then,
a great pain arose in her chest. It grew in intensity until claws exploded
from it. Great searing agony overcame her as the creature inside ripped its
way out. As she fell dying, the massive orc chief pulled his way from her
crumpled form and shouted a horrendous war cry. The other orcs shouted along
in glorious victory over the elves.

Kyraea shot straight upon from the nightmare. Her clothing and bedding were
soaked with sweat. As she put a hand to her chest, remembering the agony she
felt only moments ago, she made up her mind as to what to do. She would leave
tonight for Voralia City. There she would put the pain of her past behind her
and dedicate herself to the destruction of the evil orcish hordes as well as
any others who would try one day to come to Darsylon. It was her fault for
accepting an unjust punishment and it had taken too long for her to realize
her mistake. Now, she would dedicate herself to the cause, society be damned.
It was not for righteous to stand idly by while the defenseless innocent were
being slaughtered. Rules had their place, but not to the detriment of the
good of the whole. It was her time to rise to the task, and the journey would
start at the first swing of her blade.

As she cut with her dagger, something vaguely familiar arose in her. Having
the wits of an elf, she wondered if her distance from Darsylon caused the
spell to weaken. In such case, could she ever return to help when it was
needed? Would she be welcome? For now, practice and honing come first.

The Sad Tale of a Heroine Elf
Added Fri Apr 6 21:41:18 2007 at level 1:

It had been almost a century and a half since Kyraea Villaron had felt the
full weight of a weapon in her delicate elven hands. As the angry creature
before her rised upon its haunches, feigning to strike, she tried to summon
the memory of her past ferocity. She felt the hand with the dagger in it move
with a mind of its own, slicing into the creature's belly and drawing blood,
but it still felt amateurish. It would take time, she thought. As the
creature fell dead, she wiped the blood from her practice blade and
recollected her past. Perhaps there lie the key to attaining former glory.

Kyraea took up physical combat in her fiftieth year of age. That was the age
in which all the children of nobles in Darsylon branched in their studies.
For some, magic or thievery or forestry became their focus. Those who chose
worship became clerics and started along the path of prayer and
righteousness. Yet, for others, nothing drew more dedication, glory, pain,
and danger like the path of a warrior. Most nobles learned some swordplay,
but few chose to become masters and mistresses of all weapons. It was this
life path that Kyraea took up. She was an able student, moreso than many of
the others. As time progressed, Kyraea grew from student to instructor to
trusted battle advisor to general. By her hundredth year of life, there was
no elf in Darsylon or in all Thera who could match blades or skill with her.
Though she was untried in war, she was respected and feared by all who met
her.

Then war came.

The orcish horde, under the leadership of a new chief, rampaged towards
Darsylon. As the general of the advance forces, Lady Kyraea took command and
rode into battle upon the open plains to the south. It was here the first
skirmishes were fought. As a noble, she was to command the troops from the
rear and send out warriors to face the hordes. The enemy was too numerous,
however, and the troops were soon decimated. Morale was dwindling quickly and
her advisors suggested retreat. Yet, to admit defeat so soon when the enemy
drew so near to the valley meant that many of her kinsman would be hopelessly
slaughtered. Ignoring the protests of her war council, she took up her blades
and rode headlong into battle. Her troops, seeing her bravery, followed after
her. To the unbiased observer, it was poetic to watch her fight. Any orc that
stood before her fell in the blink of an eye. Though most orc wielded baneful
iron, Kyraea was as hard to strike as the wind itself, and breezed through
the horde with nary a scratch. Some of her troops did fall behind her, but
they were so mesmerized and heartened by the ferocity of their general that
they fought with renewed vigor. It was not long before Kyraea had the orc
chief's head on a pike as she rode to Darsylon to report victory.

Elven society is a funny thing. While each elf holds in them intrinsic
goodness and light, they still have strict rules that can seem harsh to any
outsider. Upon hearing the report of the battle, they looked sternly upon
Kyraea for her actions. Many lives were saved as the result of her actions,
but she broke the rules of her position. A noble is to command troops, not
lower themselves to the place of a common soldier. Seeing her actions as
unforgivable, they tried and convicted her in the noble

Loose Ends and Loneliness
Added Sun Jun 10 12:31:30 2007 at level 51:

Kyraea was becoming a sadder soul. It had been some time since she sought to erase her
memory and it was on the mend. The mysteries behind the letters and the blackouts had
never been solved, but the blackouts had become much less frequent. She felt she was
improving in that respect. As a Squire, she felt somewhat disappointed in herself. She
fought as hard as any other, but her numerous enemies would constantly fell her in her
fervor. This caused her to seek solitude much of the time, away from the Fortress and
her compatriots. Being a simple soldier was tough and lonely, but she persevered.
