Chapter 9

The Black tree's gifts

Ronas did as he was instructed and used his accumulated knowledge, to discuss with
a guildmaster of conjuration, and ward Asheath from harm and make his body more
robust. It pained Ronas to do so as he still hated the little Quasit so very much and
everytime he watched it squashed he knew he was closer to his own end when the
trees could no longer touch him.

Then, as he wandered from the consortium of magic that lies north of Tir-Talith he
found himself in receipt of powers bestowed upon him by the trees. He was given
the ability to twist and squish his already tainted and poisoned flesh to mimic the
pockets you often find on girdles or belts. It does make him less able to control
and persuade servitors considerably but the extra places to put magical armaments
have proven useful and something will just need to be worn to draw the eye away
from the fleshy pockets so that he can still work with the beings from the other
planes.

The second gift was more of a feeling. He had always been quite comfortable as
he walked through the woods but now he almost felt the wooded grounds through
his footwear, something like being a child in soft moccasins. He did not know whether
the black trees were trying to further his torment with reminders of a life he had once.

The third gift perplexed him the most. It seemed more of a mockery than the second
and yet he did not know that the black trees had such mirth within them. It could be a
a great boon if harnessed correctly but to make a being fear wood so much as to make
it hurt them more felt redundant in his hands. The days of being a woodsman and to
swing an axe or staff, with great accuracy and damage, are behind him and his servitors
and fellow scholars are not wooden or use wood either. He mused with the master of
the planes about the possibility of demonic treants from the shadow plane but whilst
the idea excited them both they were not knowledgeable enough to work out how.

Ronas had been putting off this journey until he had a reputation of strength in the land
but it seems he must seek out the Eye in the Darkness to help make sense of these gifts
and discuss his plans for the future Night but first he must find a suitable gift.
