Chapter 9

Pleebert considering Order/Law/Tribunal. Graspings of intelligence from an Orc brain.

Pleebert viewed the law with a certain bias. It was great and marvelous when
it protected her, but stupid and ridiculously dumb when it was against her.
Though she was never really a part of 'society', she did have a few opinions
about it.

Society, she thought, was simply a way for the Law to force you to act a
certain way. The way they would convince you to do what they wanted was not
something she liked, as it worked the same style as the Empire. They would
give you things to lose, being as the more you have the less you'd like to
lose it. The idea, Pleebert thought, was that the Law was not strong, so they
had to condition and deceive people. The Grinning Skulls had a much more
effective and intelligent method. If you were weak you groveled, if you were
strong you rule the weaklings. It wasn't based upon what you had to lose; it
was based on pure unadulterated strength.

How then, Pleebert pondered, could people actually want to join the law? You
give yourself too much to lose; you limit yourself from doing many fun
activities - Such as surprising an Elf in his guild by bashing him to death.
What was it, then, that would stimulate someone to be a Magistrate? Was it
power? Was it protection? Pleebert, being an orc, had a hard time gripping
any explanation in detail, so she settled it with a simple phrase. "Law is
stupid dumb faces".
