If this is bug I guess I should post it on the Gameplay board. I am doing more damage to myself, sometimes twice as much, from a fail then a success.
Is the damage wacked on a failure? Am I supposed to take obliterates from a failed vault and do a demolish on a successful one?

A failed Vault can hurt. It's possible your target had some protection, but the successful damage is also often high.
