Sometimes the cleave misses entirely, but I've seen this twice:
|98%hp 57%m 65%mv 1479tnl 8 AM civilized| cle monk
You learn from your mistakes, and your cleave ability improves.
Janthrio wakes and stands up.
Your cleave === OBLITERATES === Janthrio!
Janthrio has some small but disgusting cuts.
Just wondering.

It's a somewhat rare improve, but it can happen because you failed to cleave someone IN HALF!. In AP terms, anything less than IN HALF! can be philosophically thought of as "failure".
