4791, starting weapon deviance

When creating a felar warrior, the starting weapon I (accidentally) chose was axe... yet when I completed the newbie academy quest, I was awarded with a expertly balanced spear, not axe. (Nice, because I meant to choose spear.) But still, is that supposed to happen? Thought it rewards with the weapon you choose in the beginning.

This was previously addressed, but that starting weapon choice only affects what is in your hands when you begin, and the skill you begin with at 40%.
