In some cases the shields stop working and don't give damage reduction or protection against the elements. Think I posted something a while back with the eel in coral palace and the damage type. Here's a couple more instances its coming up.
First round in some fights it doesn't give damage reduction. Most of the time it's happening when I first walk in on something aggressive.

When you use pebble to boulder and it misses. I don't have this one logged, but I was fighting a thief that was wielding an acidic bite weapon and it did full damage when the boulder missed.
You toss a small pebble at a gnomish thief.
In mid-air the pebble transforms into a huge boulder!
Your huge boulder narrowly misses a gnomish thief.

Other times it keeps popping up is when I lose concentration in a fight(mostly at the beginning). And sometimes against battleragers when they bane a spell.
