3412, Donations disappearing due to demotion, bug or design? (DDDBD)

As a High Priest, I had raised about 2.75M in donations throughout my career. When I was demoted, my donations dropped to a little over 1M. Is this donation loss a designed punishment for demotion or hopefully a bug?
