And I didn't know they had to be gelded... or maybe it's just really, really cold up there?

The trail ranger looks like an easy kill.
The trail ranger is about the same size you are.
It smiles at you, hoping you will turn from your evil path.

This heavily-cloaked ranger remains alert, and despite the unbearable cold
and howling winds, manages to stay warm from within the heavy snow-elk skins
and protection spells. He notices your approach, and lowers his staff
respectfully to tell you of the four watchtowers where you may go to seek
refuge from the cold. Before you can respond, he motions for you to be off,
and to alert the rangers if you see any signs of bandits.
The trail ranger is in perfect health.

the trail ranger is using:
<worn on hands> a pair of fur-lined gloves
<wielded> a blackwood staff

*** You're VISIBLE, dumbass! ***
You step out from your cover.
Your surprise attack === OBLITERATES === the trail ranger!
The trail ranger is covered with bleeding wounds.
