By a crystal-clear pond in the woods
The land levels off after rising a ways, taking you completely out of the
wet and mucky swamp and to the beginnings of a forest. At the edge of the
tree-line, surrounded by greenery, is a good-sized watering hole. Whatever
the source of water for this pool, it is as pure and clean as the swamp
is dark and muddy. Around the pond grow vibrant, beautiful plants with
brilliant colors, and a small stream trickles out of the pool and flows
north towards the swamp. So peaceful and serene is the sight before you
that it almost seems unreal; there aren't even any animal tracks to mar
the unbroken sandy soil at the water's edge. It seems a perfect place to
rest, recuperate, and refill your canteen before pushing on.


A crystal-clear pool of water looks inviting and refreshing.

Beneath the surface of the pond
The silty bottom of the pond has been churned up by your fight, and the
pool is no longer as clear or clean as it once was. Revealed now are the
bones of animals who have fallen prey to this creature's watery embrace.

the skull and rusted armor are any indication.

Just a moment ago, the water was clear; now it is filled with clouds of
sandy particulate and this pond-monster is trying to kill you. It is shaped
like a man-sized barrel with numerous long, prehensile tendrils extending
from the top, and is perfectly colored to disguise itself along the sandy
bottom of this little oasis. Tendrils wave around, looking for something to
grab, and every few seconds another one wraps itself around you. They aren't
very strong individually, but there are so many of them, and the just keep
coming. You can feel yourself being dragged further and further from the
surface of the pond...

This is the part I have a problem with. Unless this critter has some kind of spectral/undead aspect to it, it makes no sense that it could even touch a ghost. Just another old deathtrap here that should probably get reworked (if it even exists anymore).
