10047, Bug or bad echo in Keep north of Arkham
Posted by jjoshuaa on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I found myself in a rather pesky situation as I wandered
towards the keep north of Arkham, west of the Crossroads. I
paid no heed to the sentinels warning me not to go forward. I
did however note a strange bit of "vertigo". I
approached the sentinels to the west but when I arrived in
that room the exits were north and south. I will mark this
place with a "****VERTIGO!****" Anyway, I went one
more north, and I stepped off the end of the bridge, fell into
the moat with the eels, and was slaughtered swiftly. Fine,
fair enough. I flew back to the location as a ghost, keeping
in mind that the "deathtrap" had an up exit. I
believed I could reclaim my items from my corpse, and fly up
out of the moat as a ghost. Right? Nah, didn't happen that
way... After arriving as a ghost and collecting my things,
when I tried to go up I was repeatedly pushed back into the
moat. The echo I found to be somewhat inappropriate, is as
follows:

"You step off the end of the bridge and fall into the
moat!"

Should it be more like "You slipped off the end of the
bridge..."?

I understand from discussing it with others in character that
this is a dangerous location, but is is supposed to be
impartial to ghosts as well? If so, fair enough, but I still
think the echo could be more appropriate. In fact, in general
this area feels very poorly written. The language is somewhat
broken and lacking, compared to the quality areas we have
elsewhere in our realm! Thanks for listening!

I will begin my log at the Crossroads north of Arkham, after
the eels had already killed me once.

A Crossroads
You find yourself at a crossroads, and like all crossroads
there are decisions to be made. Towards the east you can see a
road leading to a small hill rising gently upwards from the
road. As you turn to gaze to the west, you see a dark
forbidding castle sitting atop a cliff, from which rises a
plume of thick noxious black smoke. To the south you see the
trees on the edge of the forest are dying, their trunks
pock-marked and leprous with disease. Northwards a narrow dirt
road heads into the open plains. By the side of the road you
see
the corpse of an animal so horribly mutilated you cannot even
fathom what it was when it lived and breathed. You remember
now from somewhere that crossroads are strange things, full of
black magic and evil.

Path to the Keep
Trees hang down low overhead. Stillness. Oppression. The
sheer thickness of this darkness about you is stifling. You
can allow it to strangle you... or you can embrace it, wallow
in it. You feel that, if that path is one you choose, you
will be quite welcome in the black, smokey castle which lies
to the west.

A Road Flanked by Dying Trees
Dead leaves dance upon the chill winds only to settle upon
the ground of the rich black soil. The air, heavy with a gray
mist, moves slowly through the branches of the dying trees.
Off to the northwest, barely visible through the outstretched
branches, a plume of black smoke rises from a castle. The
smoke spins itself into a vortex that shrouds the keep and the
surrounding area in a blanket of darkness. To the east you
see a path leading away from this accursed place. Going to
the northwest will draw you nearer.

A Bridge Over a Putrid Moat
The scent of rotten vegetation assaults your senses as you
walk across this ancient stone bridge. The bubbling quagmire
below you passes for a moat. Gasses bubble up and pop through
the thick ooze made of excrement and dying fauna. Sleek,
eel-like forms breach the muck in what seems like a feeding
frenzy. You can go back the way you came by heading
southeast. Or continue towards the keep to the north.

The End of the Bridge Before the Keep
The cobble stoned bridge ends here. Closed to the north, is
a huge wooden drawbridge with iron bands. Going back south
will lead you to the other side of the bridge away from the
keep. The stones at the end of the bridge are cracked
terribly as if some force had broken them.

Flying Over the Moat
The eels in the moat begin to move directly below you in a
frenzied
manner. The drawbridge to the north shows no visible signs of
passage. The way back south leads to the bridge. The foul
odor rising up from the moat increases as the sludge is tossed
on the air from motion.

You step off the end of the bridge and fall into the moat!
In the Moat Eels swarm all around you as you float within this
disgusting muck. The stench evokes a feeling of nausea that
wracks your entire body with spasms. The water is a mix of
waste that is dark green, brown and black in color. Swimming
in it is futile as it is too thick, but, walking in it is
impossible as it is not quite thick enough.
