1) Well, a lot of the critters in the Academy are things like wooden statues and green slimes, and that gives you some flexibility. Shokai isn't going to swoop down from the heavens to smite you for hacking up those things. If you defend yourself from the rabid fleshy critters, you can pick and choose pretty easily.

2) That said, the next version of the Academy will not have this issue. We've kicked around some ideas internally (for exactly the reasons you give) that should iron this out.
