#613, "How to Market CF Without Joining "Team Marketing""

Not everyone has the skills, time, or interest in officially helping with CF's marketing efforts. There are, however, a handful of ways to help out that don't involve a ton of investment. Just like all the drop-in-the-bucket ways of saving energy or water add up to a lot when everyone does them, if every player who can does one or two of these things, I would think it would have a measurable impact.

1. Buy a T-shirt (or whatever, from CafePress). Seriously, buy a damn shirt, hoodie, mug, etc. You don't have to wear The Skull to work, but whether it's a shirt, mug, backpack, etc., once a while someone is going to notice it and ask "What's that?" If you have friends who are into RPGs, gaming, etc., even better.

2. If you frequent other gaming, RPG, MMO, story/poetry, art, etc. sites, put a link to CF in your forum signature, profile, etc.

3. If you're into role-playing, gaming, comics, etc., go to a convention. Wear your shirt from #1. Bring flyers. Beg Team Marketing to send you a dozen T-shirts to give out. Go there, have fun, promote CF. Find a convention near you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_gaming_conventions#United_States

4. Tell people. I'm sure CF is some folk's dirty little secret and you'd be laughed out of the bar by your pals if they knew you played. For most of us, though, we probably know someone who doesn't know about CF but might like it, if we thought about it hard enough. CF is cool. CFers are cool. Show people how cool you and CF are.

5. Put up flyers. You devote hundreds of hours to PLAYING CF. Devote 30 minutes to putting up a flyer at your local college, library, community center, etc. If you can be bothered, do it every 3-6 months.

6. If you're not too cool for it, plug CF on your Facebook, Twitter, etc. accounts.

There are plenty of areas in which CF does a poor job of, or completely fails to make the best of the exposure it gets or could get. A better website, nicer forum, updated newbie guide, friendlier staff, etc., blah, blah would be great. They're working on it, and if they aren't, there isn't anything you can do about that. You can, however, help bring in new prospects and hope for the best.

It CAN help. It CAN'T hurt, and it doesn't take much of your time.

When you consider the relative size of the player base, it wouldn't take much for these things to go a long way if everyone who can did them.
