#144, "Purpose of this forum..."

We think CF is a great game and would appeal to a lot of people who have never heard of it, but would make great new players and have a good time with the game. Getting the word out is a big job and it's one best done by all of us, staff and player alike.

So! This is a place to:

- Discuss how CF should be marketed. Should we be taking out Google AdWords or putting up flyers or posting on game forums or investigating the cost of radio or TV time? Let's talk about it here. This is a community effort, so please, when you have an idea, do some of the legwork for it and post the results whenever possible -- research the costs in time and/or money and what the impact would be if you can.

- Discuss who CF should be marketed to, and how. What aspects of the game would appeal to that audience or turn them off? Is there a way we can shape our message so that the people drawn in by it are more likely to be people who would actually enjoy CF? Talk about your ideas, or what you're doing to put them into action. There won't be only one good angle here, so if you know a bunch of other people are working one, feel encouraged to pick up something else.

There's a potential to put time in and see a big impact here, especially for people that don't take to our stereotypical ways of improving CF. If you're the person pimping CF to X community and we see a big influx of quality players from that community, everyone will know that you managed to do a great thing for the game.

- Talk about ways to improve our ability to receive new players. I feel like we improved our home page significantly with the help of volunteers on the contest forum a while back, but there's still a lot, lot more that can and should be done. We still have a web page mostly geared towards providing information and discussion for existing players, rather than convincing someone who heard about the game that they want to give it a shot or helping them have a good time as they start playing. We can improve on that. What kind of content can we provide to help people who have no idea of what a MUD even is?

Similarly, our newbie experience is 1000x better than when I started playing CF, thanks to countless people (staff and players) who help out on the newbie channel and things like Academy rewrites, but there's still room for improvement here.

- Talk about what kind of information we are gathering or could be gathering to help with this.

- Do! We talk a lot about how we should market CF. Let's actually do it. It's a great game, and more quality players can only make it more fun.
