Chapter 1

Battle filled his senses. The clash of steel meeting steel and the thud and
rip of steel meeting flesh mixed with the panicked screams of the dying and
joyous shouts of the living. The smell of blood and death was muddled with
freshly torn grass and the musty odor of kicked up duff off of the forest
floor. Teithiwr could feel the sweat fall across his body, sharply stinging
him where it hit an open wound. Blood, sweat and dirt caused his hair to stick
to his face and he tried to brush it out of his eyes in the few seconds of
respite he had gained by striking down his foe. He assessed his place in the
melee and dove back in.

He had been separated a bit by the fighting and was driving back towards his
three brothers, who were holding a small glade where the women and children
had found refuge. The attackers were a force of wizards from the village to
the west called Maethien. They had hired mercenaries and had wizards bringing
forth all manner of elemental monsters. In fact, an explosion of fire erupted
on his left. Another huge fire elemental, he called out to the few remaining
warriors near him, and as a unit they turned to face it. It was at that very
moment his youngest brother called out in a panic, "NO! That one is going to
cast a magic....
