Chapter 1

Riffs mother was well out of depth when she stumbled in that cave with a
baby duergar on her back. Riff was too young for memories, but it was later
described how she took a few swipes from the troll with his cruel battle axe.
She later bled out and left Riff there for the orcs to scavenge on. Except
that didnt happen. A goblin woman found Riff and took him back to her
home. So Riff was raised by goblins in the goblin village. Riff had a
rough upbringing because he was different. But Riff was tough, much tougher
than the young goblins, but they were sneaky. They would always find a way
to make him look foolish. Riff learnt that muscle alone was not enough, he
had to use his imagination and anticipate the imagination of others. The
religion of his guardians was that of the Goblin King. Symbols of the Goblin
King could be found all over the house.Riff was exposed to this religion
and never knew anything different. It especially appealed to him as a rags
to god story, because he was the rags and thought anything could be possible
for him.

One of his friends in the goblin village told him that he should always show
an image of the goblin king on his clothes or armor. It was said to imbue
the wearer with cunningness. So Riff always did this. He wanted to be
cunning because there was one emotion that almost consumed him.This was
anger.There did not appear to be any specific reason, Riff seemed to have
been born with a temper. He would quickly get angry and then violent. Later
in life when Riff met other duergar, he discovered that he was especially
angry for his race. Combining Anger with cunningness would be the key to his
story.

Riff did not desire to dampen his anger at all.It was simply how he was.
Instead he wanted to make use of it. He wanted to murder and pillage to make
the Goblin King proud. And this is what he set out to do. It was a rocky
start for Riff as he soon found out that many of his prey used magic and this
was hard to defend against with a sword. Some would use magical potions and
other magical items. But Riff was given a potion as a young child and almost
died. Riff experienced trauma from the potion and swore off them later in
life. Riff could have avoided the magi and fought sword against sword or
sword against axe. But Riff thought what would the Goblin King do, and that
