Kaeldran the Communer of Diseases

Description

The giant that stands before you towers far above any human.
It would seem that he was a storm giant except a thin, fine
layer of white fur growing all over his body. In place of
just a beard is a proud and noble mane leaving all but his
eyes covered by hair. The eyes that peer out, though, are
wild and untamed. Still, there is a great amount of wisdom
in the eyes, leading you to believe this wild giant has a
keen mind ready for the hunt. His arms and legs, sinewy and
lean, still seem to be powerful hunting tools. As you
examine him a little closer, stripes of black are barely
visible through the white fur and contrasting against dark
blue skin underneath. You get the impression that this
hulking giant is well-prepared for any hunt.

The Witch Doctor of the Forest
Added Tue Apr 6 11:08:31 2004 at level 31:

Time had passed since the imp had denied a stronger bane. It
came as a surprise, but Kaeldran took it without disappointment.
As day and week and month passed, the burden of the bane
seemed lighter, yet the imp had told him that it had not yet
begun to weaken. It left Kaeldran with the question of what
exactly was happening to him. Perhaps the weight of such a
curse that pushed on his shoulders had merely caused him to
grow stronger in body. He was pushing up against it and
surmounting the challenge. It seemed the most logical conclusion.

Still, there was one other thing that nagged at the peripheals
of the giant. On his last meeting with the imp, it told him
that his time spent in civilization was domesticating the
wild shaman. Horrid thoughts of a life spent indoors, surrounded
by walls, flashed through the giant's mind. He shook away the
images and nodded at the imp. Mentally, he made strong note
of the implications of what the imp said. As the meeting
ended, Kaeldran made his way from the forest. Deciding to
make a change in his life and further sate his hunger for the
hunt and to live on instinct, he knew there was only one thing
to do. He headed to the heart of the Virgin forest. There,
he gathered leaves and a few haunches of food and set about
marking the territory as his own. This was to be his home.
There should never be question again as to whether the giant
was a domesticated creature. All he ever needed was in the
forest: food, water, shelter... The peace and serenity he felt
there could never be attained within the confines of city walls.
Howling into the light of the moon, Kaeldran went out from
his new home to face the world as a wild, free giant. The Witch
Doctor is in.

Focus Upon the Task
Added Thu Mar 18 20:34:18 2004 at level 23:

With his first victory under his belt, Kaeldran felt alive and free. To think
that if this were Galadon and these foul beings were slaying innocent people
there, he would be considered the criminal for interloping. The thought of it
sickened him. Kaeldran roamed the lands with freedom blowing through his wild
white hair. Coming upon a grassy clearing, he sat down to meditate. Visions
of the nightmares of his past came flooding back to him. The sight of cities
burning, corpses of bodies, and rivers of blood once again haunted his mind.
Yet, as he focused on the bodies of the dead, he noticed their armor belonging
to the Imperial order. The city he saw burning in his mind was clearly the
city of Udgaard. His mind came jarring back to reality just then. What did it
mean? "Funny things, dreams... are they really divine messages, or...". The
giant's mind focused clearly on his chosen path. Freedom was what mattered.
The freedom to live one's own life freely. The evils of order must be abolished.
Those of dark heart especially knew no end to enslaving the people. Kaeldran
would set them free. The imp's bane was waning in him, and he knew that if
he were to accomplish his goals, he would need the full blessing of his deity.
Lumbering to his feet, Kaeldran made his way to seek the chaos once more.

The Taste of Blood
Added Thu Mar 18 19:40:59 2004 at level 23:

The rain poured as Kaeldran made his way towards Darsylon. On the tip of a
thief that seemed trustworthy, there were several creatures of darkness
slaughtering the innocent high elves. They were, as he was told, a necromancer
and two fire giants of the warrior's guild. In tow down the road behind Kaeldran
and the thief was a madly dwarf unwilling to accept the help of a shaman in
slaying a mage. So the group of two with the unlikely commisseration of the
third made their way as silently as possible towards the gates of Darsylon.
The thief, sneaking inside the city just long enough to ascertain whether the
defilers still desecrated the city, returned and nodded towards Kaeldran. The
shaman walked within range of his powers inside the city and tried to summon
the necromancer. The first try was with no success. Frustration burned on the
giant's neck. Concentrating harder, a second try met success. As the shaman
reared back to commune his wrath upon his victim necromancer, the vile creature
sent him to slumber. As maledictions were cast upon the sleeping giant's body,
the dwarf finally arrived. Rather than seeking to slay the mage who befouled
him, the dwarf instead turned his attack on the sleeping shaman, waking him
up. The shaman, blinded by the necromancer's spells, communed his blindness
upon the one who struck him, who in turn, fled. The thief, who had been waiting
for the most opportune time to strike did so against the drained death mage.
Kaeldran immediately followed suit in attacking his groupmate's enemy. Though
blind he was, his blows still landed tellingly. Within short time, the foul
creature fell. The giant brought down a blessing of sight unto himself once
more to see the deed done. The spray of blood upon his clothes awakened in him
his instinct to hunt and kill. At last, he had tasted a well-deserved victory.
The rest of the necromancer's party fled Darsylon, unwilling to face the wrath
of a blood-crazed giant shaman and a deadly thief. Kaeldran smiled to himself
as the thought of an imp smiling at him pervaded his thoughts.

Growing in Power
Added Tue Mar 16 11:54:45 2004 at level 16:

Day and night, the words of the imp had burned in his mind. Lyristeon, the
granter of Kaeldran's bane was wise. "Do not bow to anyone. Let instinct
drive you. Do not seek to honor me." As Kaeldran grew in power, he began to
realize what the imp meant. He began to take confidence in his skills and
the powers granted him. Gone was the humility that training within the city
had taught him. If one relies truly on his instinct, there is no need for
apology. Though he would make mistakes, as any would, not a peep would be
heard from him regarding his actions. He sought freedom. The kind of freedom
one could not attain in the city. While he felt comfortably out of place
within man's walls, the open spaces of the wilderness were his true home.
Perhaps, he pondered, that is why he was taken away from his family and left
to survive in nature... Thoughts of the imp burned malevolently within his
head. 'Instinct... freedom...'

The Imp's Bane
Added Mon Mar 15 19:49:43 2004 at level 7:

Having met the immortal who has pervaded his dreams, only more questions were
left. The imp had said to him, 'Follow your instincts. Do not bow to me or
seek to honor me. I do not wish your groveling.' And when asked of the dreams,
the imp replied, 'Are dreams really divine messages... or perhaps they are
manifestations of your own will.' Kaeldran was left to ponder these cryptic
phrases, yet he felt a great weight set upon his shoulders. Perhaps it was
the dark blessing of an imp... or even just the realization of the power that
truly flowed through him.

Training the Mares of Night
Added Mon Mar 15 19:13:03 2004 at level 7:

His first night in Galadon, Kaeldran had a strange dream. In it, was a small
imp standing outside a building. Lightning shot out of the windows while the
sound of metal clanging against metal came from within. Drawing a dagger, the
imp entered the building.

Kaeldran woke up and strangely understood the dream. He knew he was meant to
spend his time here training. Day and night he learned the intracies of
swordplay while attending the needs of faith in a nameless master. He could
not explain his own thoughts and feelings, but somehow, he had felt complete
and utter devotion to his deity. Yet, his identity still remained a mystery.
As Kaeldran's skills improved, the questions mounted in his mind. 'What does
the divine one want?', 'Will I ever know who he is?', 'Who are my parents and
where did I come from?' As he grew more bold in thoughts, his nights grew
sleepless with unnatural nightmares. Cities burned with himself as the
destructor. A mountain of bloody bodies sat beneath his feet. The heavens
fell from the sky at his bidding. Yet, in every dream, the image of an imp
appeared before him to which he bowed his head.

One night after a hard day of training, the young giant fell into a hypnotic
sleep. Chaos swirled all about him. Velvety black and gray colors mixed and
mingled. Amidst them was the imp, grinning and staring straight into his soul.
Kaeldran awoke with a start. He had gotten the message and went to where he
believed he was beckoned to.

+ The Storm and the Child
Added Mon Mar 15 16:51:14 2004 at level 1:

It was well over a hundred years ago when the birth of Kaeldran took place.
Amidst the stormy seas where his giant kin lived, a great tempest swelled.
Among the giants of the storm, this was seen as a blessing, especially if a
child was born as the eye of the storm hovered over them.

On this night, the birth of a baby was marked by such a blessing. His parents
named him Kaeldran Matterok, meaning 'Child of the Storm's Eye'. As his parents
held their new child in their nurturing arms, a malevolent chuckle was heard
above the din of the storm. The clouds swirled and a face appeared. "I have
plans for this one." With that, the winds howled and a great rush of air tore
Kaeldran from his parent's arms and flung him into the tempest.

The storm had carried the child far away from his home. He landed safely in a
pasture of wild grass as the winds ceased and the tempest dissipated. It may
have seemed that the child was alone, but the divine presence that tore him
from the arms of his mother and father also blessed him to be able to survive.
The animals of the forest were heeded by the immortal and watched closely
over the infant. Food and protection was provided by a pack of wolves, several
deer lead him to water sources, and the smaller creatures of the forest
provided companionship in times of loneliness. So Kaeldran grew safely in his
environment, never seeing another like his kind, but becoming the child of
the forest.

Years of growth went by. The child never learned the tongue of man, but came
to understand the language of the animals. He ate and drank and enjoyed the
bounty of nature. It was one sunny day that a storm appeared out of nowhere.
Kaeldran grew quite afraid and looked for some shelter, but an invisible power
held him fast. He looked with horror up in the sky as a face appeared in the
clouds. "My child, your name is Kaeldran, kin to the giants of the storm. I
brought you here many years ago so that I could shape you into the servant
you must become for me. You will never know who your biological parents are,
nor will you ever be allowed to search for your true home. The meaning of
your life is to be the servant I require. You must go forth in the world and
let them know that I come. Go now, for I have blessed you with the knowledge
you need to survive in the world of man, just as I have caused nature to let
you survive in her world."

With that, the storm ceased and the sun shone brightly. Kaeldran was free to
move and realized he had understood all that had been said to him. Vast insight
into the world was afforded him, as well as the gift of man's language. While
the identity of the divine presence that ordered him into the world was yet
unknown to him, he looked around and started walking in the direction he knew
Galadon to be.

The immortal laughed to himself... "A great puppet he shall be to me. I look
forward to the destiny he shall fulfill..."
