Chapter 1

A modest start

Born near Voralian City, Evelmas spent most of her life around there. Her
parents owned a chicken farm on the outskirts, and she grew up helping out
with the animals. Her mom kept trying to get her to help with the culling
of the chickens, but Evelmas was always too afraid or too squeamish to
participate. Her fear of hurting others would be something that followed
her through life, often at her peril.

As a young adult, she left the farm to find her own path. She wound up at
the tower of sorcery, hired as a kitchen girl. She spent a few years there
cleaning and carrying peoples meals up to room. She also had made a few
friends among the students, and been tutored in basic fire and cold spells,
in the expectation that they may make her better with her job with heating
up meals and cooling down drinks.

She found that she was naturally adept with magic, and was able to expand
on the powers she had learned, finding herself able to conjure up all of
the elements in some form or another. The masters of the tower refused to
allow to her learn more advanced spells, however. She was just some
country girl, and nobody of consequence they felt.

Well, after several years of service, Evelmas decided that was enough. She
grabbed an unowned spellbook from a supply closet, bundled up her meager
belongings, and walked out one day.

She ended up back in Voralian City, working as a clerk for the captain of
the city guard who was her distant cousin. She would spend her days pouring
over legal documents and guard rosters, and her nights were spent trying
to unlock the secrets of magic. By her own insight, Evelmas had eventually
managed to achieve both a start as a law administrator, and had enough of
a grasp of magic to be a force on her own. At heart though, she was always
going to feel like that little girl too afraid to kill her familys
chickens, and that would present itself as a reoccurring theme in many
conflicts she faced in life where she just was not willing to fight unless
her back was against the wall and had no other choice. But there was enough
violence in the world for others to handle, she was satisfied avoiding
conflict and keeping the bureaucracy running smoothly.
