Chapter 2

Life on the Loch
Added Sat Jun 5 16:52:24 2021 at level 1:

Over the years the StormShields grew to love their adopted son, they never had
children off their own, and though there was much learning required in caring for a
felar they did the best they could. Even if the several attempts at swimming lessons
early on left them with claw marks to this day.
Furios joined the rest of the young Storm Giants in school, and quickly to the
civilized way of speaking.

When Furios was old enough his parents grudgingly let him begin his warrior training
with the other Storm Giants. They didn't worry about his enthusiasm but always
worried about the size and strength difference he had with the other members of his
training class.
One of the first things the students were asked to do was to choose a weapon for
training purposes. Although Furios didn't know it at the time there weren't really
any particularly suited to him. Many axes, maces, swords and polearms were available
but lighter weapons were lacking. So it was that Furios chose a polearm, in part
as it felt like an extension of his claws and would help with the reach difference
with the rest of the class. Groant even created him a lighter version that Furios
would be able to swing better than the usual oversized heavy polearms the giants
used.

To begin with the other members of the class took it easy on Furios in their bouts,
they were worried they would hurt him too badly. But they quickly found the error
of their ways when he would repeatable dodge their blows only to chop down the
polearm on to their knees. Even when he got hit, he was back up in a moment, ready
to continue the fight. After the first few bouts the other class members gave it
their all and Furios was able to hold his own against all but the best.

Amongst the many classes were instruction and stories on matters outside of the
Loch. Such as the other cities, the Empire, the Outlanders and the Fortress. Although
the Loch was well protected by the Watch, their patrols and people still travelled
far and there were not so insular that they did not keep track of what was going on
in the world beyond their borders.
The stories of the Fortress and the Maran who fought from it struck a cord with Furios.
Although he couldn't remember his real parents, his adopted family never hid anything
from him, and he knew of the attack that had killed them. If he could hunt down those
of wicked intent so as to prevent similar horrors happening again, then that surely
that had to be a duty to be sought.

The StormShields always gave encouragement to Furios and in this they were no different.
Many honoured Storm Giants joined the Fortress or hunted wicked outside of the Loch in
their own way. So although they would miss Furios something terribly, when it came time
to say goodbye they helped him pack and with final words of advice and encouragement they
bid farewell to their son, saddened to see him go but fiercely proud of their adopted son.
