That pet peeve is... "super-genius".

No, seriously. This has bothered the hell out of me since I first logged on in December 2001. The term gives me a science fiction vibe, rather than a medieval fantasy one. It feels out of place.

Presently, the intelligence stat scales as "average/genius/super-genius/god-like". My 2023 wish is for that to be changed to something like "average/intelligent/genius/god-like".

It's simple and insignificant, with no ramifications for game mechanics. Then again, it's something that has been around since times immemorial, so some may get a little sentimental about it.

I'm all for changing it. Here's to hoping!

No dog in this fight, it matters little to me, but providing some context, I believe that the labels for intelligence in CF were inspired by those used in Dungeons and Dragons, 2nd edition, contemporary to the time CF and the ROM/DIKU code base was evolving. D&D did incorporate science fiction since it's original version (Blackmoor), so the description having a science fiction feel for this stat is appropriate in that game. Below is the description chart for Intelligence as published in the 2nd edition D&D monster manual:


0 Nonintelligent or not ratable
1 Animal intelligence
2–4 Semi-intelligent
5–7 Low intelligence
8–10 Average (human) intelligence
11–12 Very intelligent
13–14 Highly intelligent
15–16 Exceptionally intelligent
17–18 Genius
19–20 Supra-genius
21+ Godlike intelligence

We're at a maybe. Get some player commentary on this one and if everyone likes it / is cool with it, we'll present it.

The recommendation makes way more sense than current. There should be an option between average and genius.

I'd even go a step further and say 14-15 be something like "dim-witted" or "slow". 16-17 as average, 18-20 as intelligent, 21-23 as genius, and 24-25 as god-like.

I agree, it always seemed weird to me that the "dumb" races all get average intelligence. That's not what "average" means

I would support this change, personally. I am also in support of the original suggestion, for the record.

It always confused me that it would tell me I'm intelligent, but I'm really not.

So...generally "slow" races...the most intelligent of them are average
or reasonably intelligent. Just...the other 90% of the race is busy
being absolute idiots.

On the topic of the actual change though...I like it!

In "super-genius" the "super" is just silly and the same can be said of "god-like", genius is more that perfect for describing the most bright mortals.
