Chapter 3

Ziv Ara'Khree sat on a cliff overlooking a lower plateau of her village in
the evenings fading light. A cooshie sat on her side, tongue lapping out
happily, obviously well fed and blissfully unaware. Were that she was so
unaware.

She hadn't meant to hurt Sazel, but she had. And she didnt feel bad
about it. What did that mean? She looked on as the orange glow lit her face
feeling all was surreal and struggling to comprehend the moment and sudden
shift in her life. In that brief moment when the experiment had worked,
before her cooshie ate the familiar, she had felt alive! She finally knew
what she was good at. She saw how others looked at her mastery even if they
didnt understand that mastery, and she wanted that. This is how her
parents must feel as the famous wizards they were. She would no longer be
just a pretty arial, though she was very beautiful. She would be pretty and
revered for accomplishments and mastery.

Ziv made a decision. She was an Ara'Khree no more. She would fly from this
place. However, before she did so, she forced herself to stand there and
watch. She felt no loss at the destruction of the magical school she had so
loathed. Something about it felt right, felt satisfying. Yet she had a
conscious and forced her thoughts on the non-magical villager Korok and other
friends accidentally killed.

Accident or not, she had burnt her village to the ground, and it was her
penance now to watch it burn to the ground.

Chapter 2

And so the second year of school progressed. Every day was a struggle and
every day Ziv had to become cleverer using her sleight of hand talents and
knack for building contraptions. However, Ziv began to worry, as the lessons
got harder and harder, and she ran out of ingredients that could pass as the
type of spells they were beginning to learn.

Presentation day. Invisibility. Dread. She had planned, but she was still
nervous and had an uneasy feeling as she waited to go last. Today they were
asked to all bring in their family pets and cast the spell on a living
animal. Her only option had been, Kooshka, her familys cooshie. A usual
pet in this village, but one that fit her exotic parents perfectly.

Of COURSE Sazel would be up before her. Sazel's mocking smile seemed
targeted as her as she not only cast the invisibility perfectly, but on her
black cat no less than she had bonded that morning for extra credit! Ziv
chirped something less than flattering under her breath. Mostly for her and
Kooshka's personal satisfaction.

It was time. Her turn. Ziv was as confident as she was beautiful when it came
to putting it on. And so she became the presenter, the performer, it was the
only way to be convincing and play the part. She threw off her cape and
unfurled her wings, and in a flourish of a spin her cooshie had disappeared!
She of course knew that Kooshka was hidden in her discarded heavy cape. This
had worked! Training, carefully sewn compartments, and the focus of the
minds eye had fooled an entire class. Maybe she was a wizard of more
mundane matters!

Sazel's cat meows. No! Suddenly the heavy embroidered cape lunges across
the floor! The whole alchemy bench comes crashing down and flames immediately
begin to unnaturally spread as only magical flame can. Sazel screams! Kooshka
takes off after the damn black cat! The cooshie growls and the familiar is
covered by the cape and the most horrific feline screeching ensues! Suddenly
Sazel's scream turns to one of piercing pain and she cries out as her body
is racked by convulsions! Fire everywhere! People screaming and running! Ziv
runs, seeking escape, seeking air, just seeking.

Chapter 1

Ara'Khree was not only an outpost among the arial people, but one that
stood out among the lands for the magical accomplishment of the Ara'Khree
family and famous wizarding couple who helped found its creation. In fact,
outpost was not the correct term. It truly was a village of magical splendor
and progress. For any arial adventurer with a mixed spirit of exploration and
magical affinity, it was a perfect choice for a community or mage schooling
far from their major city.

For Ziv Ara'Khree there was no choice. Her parents were the famous couple
whose magical accomplishments everyone revered. Expectations were high.

As magical couriers wizzed by, Ziv gave a mischievous grin to the laborer
Korok, revealing that again he had chosen wrong in his guess of which three
shells the marker was under. "Wrong again, Korok! Another TWO silver!"
The old laborer and fellow arial grumbled as once again his purse was
lightened by a bet gone wrong on his way to work. Ziv Ara'Khree did not
need the money, but there was something exciting about the textile feel of
silver coins, coins she had earned, by a talent she was adept in. Sleight of
hand.

Chimes. Magical chimes. She sighed, she must not be late for schooling. She
had enough going against her as it was.

She stepped into her class. Day one of year two had arrived. She was past the
first year of purely history and theory. Year two brought experiments and
basic spellcasting. Talents she had long discovered no affinity or ability to
accomplish.

The lesson consisted of conjuring a ball of light. While most of the students
produced only feeble balls that winked out of existence, her nemesis Sazel of
course produced a thing of radiant beauty. Sazel was equal parts popular,
magically gifted, beautiful and definitely frustrating. Since Ziv was the
only arial in the village more beautiful than Sazel, she always made sure to
remind Ziv of the fact that Sazel was her superior in the other three traits.
This was done always surrounded by a mean group of arial girls of course.

When no one was looking, Ziv slipped out the flash powder and phosphorous,
sputtered out the words of the spell... maybe... and used her non-magical
skills to enact the experiment. The results were interesting to say the
least. They definitely sparked and sputtered, but her mission was
accomplished as their teacher Mrs. Screech, as they liked to call her behind
her back, came over and sighed at Zivs failed attempt. It was embarrassing
to be the worse magical student in class, but at least they thought she had
magic. Ziv stormed out of the class with talons and fists clenched as the
mocking twittering and chirping from Sazel and her cohorts played out behind
her back.
