I think as long as you stay away from the nature-oriented classes (ranger and druid), lots of options work fine. Invokers, bards, and conjurers have some unique difficulties because of area-effect abilities, and while they also have some appealing features, I might not recommend them for someone new to the cabal.
Beyond that, play what sounds exciting to you! There's isn't a "best" answer.
