Afaik one of the features of Vista was that various drivers (notably video) were going to run in user mode, meaning driver flaws wouldn't take down the whole OS.

That said, I don't plan to even consider switching to Vista until about SP3. By that time, hopefully they will have worked out all the kinks, and hardware/driver producers will have "caught up".
