Im not taking sides on this issue, as I wasnt there and dont know the whole story....but this statement refers to maran leaders in general.
As the Captain, talking to two squires he should give an order. No room for questions. Listen to one sentence from each side, then say "Here is what will be done. Go do it." He shouldnt even have to listen to 100 tells and crap explaining this. One line, " I dont want to hear more of this nonsense, go hunt evil and get out of my sight."
Naref is being far too nice, and squires should be dutifully listening to the maran leader. If they have a problem, go to Shokai, or send a missive.
I liked traveling with Naref, but Maran leaders have always been pushovers.
