Chapter 3

The whip cracked her back, her spine snapped, jolting her from her tired
stupor of dulling servitude. She snarled and turned her head, narrowing her
eyes and glaring at the massive guard. A wave of anger rolled over her. She
FELT something, something for the first time, deep in her bones. Emotion? The
decades as a prisoner had long dulled anything resembling such. But now she
felt it, an uprising. Apparently so did the guard as he grunted as if
afflicted by a sharp pain, a piercing shiv.

Hot air rolled across her skin, something more than the currents of the lava
pit of the prisons chasm.

The feeling continued, warming her and making her head spin. Her anger turned
to fury. Then, then, there it was. The earth trembled a bit. Voices
whispered in her ears, they swirled about like the venting steam. An
awakening.

"Fire. Fury. Lava. Lightning. Wind. Prey. Anger. Storms."

The chamber rumbled, the ceiling falling in on itself. Magma spewed from the
floor. Fissures broke in the floor, the walls. A goblin runt fell to its
demise, "UTINI" it cried aloud.

Still the cavern clamored from the reverberations of the earth. The hot air
swirled further about her, and she felt its embrace pulling her toward the
fissure in the wall. The hissing steam seemingly spoke but not in an
unfamiliar yet knowable tongue. "Escape, child. Your prayers are answered.
Reave the night. Ever be free!"

She climbed the sharp rocks, twisting and turning, to her freedom.
