Chapter 4

Why was I put here? A question that has stuck with me
since the day I was born. I do not fear the question,
nor do I run from it. Merely, I am puzzled by it. Being
a drow, I shouldn't really care about such a question.
According to drow lore, and Lloth's priestesses, I
should only care about one thing: the appeasement of
Lloth. But that, in itself, would go against our very
nature, would it not? A great drow prophet once said
that "In each of us drow lies the passion for greatness."
Hah! I can almost hear my mother now, in her croaking
voice, shouting at me to forget that nonsense, and get
back to my studies. A dried-up old windbag, she was,
but for good reason. You see, in her prime, she was the
most beautiful drow to walk the streets of drow-city.
She was the head of one of the strongest and most highly
regarded houses in drow city. Her beauty was derived
from ancient magic that was passed down the lineage of
Bon'Durdin bloodline for centuries. Each of the firstborn
females were to recieve the gift. She used her beauty
to gain allies and respect amongst her peers and soon,
as story has it, her arrogance outweighed her servitude
to Lloth. As legend has it, she was struck down by Lloth
and lost all of her beauty, and the house of Bon'Durdin
lost all respect and power. This was her fate. The fate
of a follower of the Spider Queen who'se ambitions for
themselves overstep their boundaries. So then, what
fate awaits me? I digress, for now. For if I am to
attempt an answer to that question, I must first evaluate
what brought me to it. You see, after my mother's
downfall, she grew bitter. Bitter unlike anything seen
before in this land. She sought retrebution. But over
the centuries, she found none. Regardless of her uglyness
she bore child after child, searching for a female to
pass on her magic, and the family house, so that it may
rise to power once again. But time and time again, she
bore male children. She had all but given up by the
time I came into this world. I was the last of eight
children, and the only female. On the day of my birth,
it was said that cold winds blew through the streets
of drow city with no sign of origin. The priestesses
saw it as a sign, and it was proficised that I was to
become the head priestess of our great temple. Which
may have been something worthwhile, if it were not that
the only way to become head priestess was to sacrifice
yourself, that your soul be trapped forever inside the
temple in servitude of Lloth forever. You see, servitude
never really appealed to me... I'm more of a.. free-spirit.
None-the-less, I was groomed into being the next in a
long line of trapped souls. My mother was thrilled, of
course, for to be the mother of a sacrificed priestess
was well-respected, indeed. But I knew that my place
was not to be trapped forever in servitude of Lloth.
For as long as I can remember, I have held sway over
the natural forces of this world. It began with simply
moving a few pebbles about with nothing more than my
mind. Then I began to make fire dance apon my command,
and water freeze with a simple word. The priestesses,
of course, believed that it was the power of Lloth that
I was wielding, but I knew better. As I grew older and
