I think this was related to a gag command on a crappy alias removing stuff upon hitting a certain word. This is what happened to the star bottle in the loch. As soon as I removed the alias, everything was fine.

Removed that alias a while ago after imm responses to the star bottle "bug" made what was happening evident, sorry for the bother.
