2326, Addition to the "practice echoes" from Zulgh.
Posted by Urden on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I posted this as a reply to his post in "announcements", but maybe you
guys thought it was too nice to implement?

Anyway, the idea goes like this...

This is Zulgh's new echo right here.
Echo when you are wielding a weapon you don't know:
You are spending more time focusing on a fist of lightning, to even attempt to learn the nuances of nova!

My idea was to swing the pendulum the other way when you are wielding
something that you are good with. (Your learning would improve once
your weapon skill hit 90%, and get better all the way up.) To clarify,
an example would look like this:

Echo when you are wielding a weapon that you are confident with, or
have mastered.

Your mastery with a jeweled dagger allows you to concentrate more on
learning the nuances of nova!
You have become better at nova!

I say that this change would increase the chance of improving, and
even the percent increased by 1%, or 2% for weapon-oriented classes,
who, by default, are so adept at their weapons that they don't even
think about them as they use them. It's like how a martial artist
becomes so trained that every action becomes a reaction, and fighting
becomes a reflex.

Anyone digging this? If you're not, do you enjoy practicing?
2367, Do any Imms like this idea, or not? Some feedback would be nice. nt

The reasons you can't learn Nova while wielding an axe is because you're trying to focus on two very different tasks.

Given how easy it is to have 90% in a weapon, your system would amount to giving everyone in the game a bonus to learning every skill, for nothing. I think we're pretty happy with the current learning rates.

As an aside, it takes time to answer posts in detail. If no one answers a post after a couple days, it either means we can't answer it without giving away information we don't want to give away, or no one is particularly interested in it. To go back to a previous Zulgh point, if you want I can write "I don't find this interesting. (n/t)" next to every post where it would apply, but I don't think it would add much to the board.

Well, "nova" would have to be practiced with a weapon that an invoker
can use. The point is this: If you have a chance to improve some ability
(spell or otherwise) while wielding a weapon AT ALL, wouldn't it make
perfect sense if your chances improved as your skill in that weapon did?

For an example, I did Kenpo for quite a few years, and I remember being
an unrefined fighter in the early days. That is, I would have to spend
more time thinking during the fight instead of acting. As time went on
and I sparred more and more, the things that I once thought complex
became easier, which allowed me to focus more on different aspects of
the fight. You can apply the same logic to anything. Take writing, for
instance. A third-grader will spend a lot longer writing a paragraph
than a senior in high school, and that's because they are focusing
hard on the technique of writing, rather than "what they want to write
about."

If this doesn't make sense to you, I'm baffled. But I think it does
make perfect sense.

Also, to clarify things a little more here...this should only work
on abilities that are less than 90% trained. This might counterbalance
some of your concerns. The reason it would work this way is that once
a character gets something to 90%, he's basically hammering out the
last little details of the ability, so that would require greater
concentration.

And if THAT doesn't make this more appealing, then how about...

-------------------------------------------------------------------
FOCUS

syntax: focus (melee/abilities/none)

Every character can choose what they would like to focus upon while
fighting the denizens of Thera. Fighters may desire to choose the
"melee" focus, which would allow them to learn basic weaponry better,
while mages, bards, and communers may desire to choose the "abilities"
focus, which would lessen their fighting skills, allowing them to
learn better from whatever other abilities they might use during a
battle. (communes for priests, spells for mages, songs for bards.)
"FOCUS" only works when fighting npc's, and is treated as non-existant
when fighting other players.

P.S. Yes, I would rather you put a "No, this idea sucks" than to
leave no response at all. Neglect is the silent killer. ;)

2374, it makes sense but

I think people would not take long to start whining about how they can't practice a weapon they aren't good with at the same time as a spell, without being penalised for it.
2375, They can...that would be the normal setting. nt

2370, Does this mean that...

invokers without the h2h skill are at a disadvantage if they wield no weapon at all?
2371, Nope.

The penalty only applies to wielding weapons you do not know. The new echoes are self-explanatory.
