You create a physical item using a pen and some kind of paper (you need to find them) and the item you create is a piece of paper with a message that can be read by those who hold it.

It is useful when dealing with some mobs too.

Subtle differences (like things that prog against stone skin may not against sheen of stone). Also the ac effect differs iirc. That can matter at low level and for the legacy "gates of the forge".

Yes, used to be dex and now is con.

Too broad a question. For example, as an Orc the demon in the woodpile edge is useful. I'd try to take seasoned traveller, calmed mind etc.
