As you can see from Sock's picture:
%1 refers to first * in alias line and %2 means the second * in alias line and @target is the value of your variable target, the one you set with the targ * alias. You can see two plus signs in the alias line as well. Those define the ++ syntax in the command. So, with this alias, you can type ambush++ onslaught and it does ambush bob onslaught (if the value of your variable target is bob).
