Afterglow

Ziv Ara'Khree sat on a cliff overlooking a lower plateau of her village in
the evenings fading light. A cooshie sat on her side, tongue lapping out
happily, obviously well fed and blissfully unaware. Were that she was so
unaware.

She hadn't meant to hurt Sazel, but she had. And she didnt feel bad
about it. What did that mean? She looked on as the orange glow lit her face
feeling all was surreal and struggling to comprehend the moment and sudden
shift in her life. In that brief moment when the experiment had worked,
before her cooshie ate the familiar, she had felt alive! She finally knew
what she was good at. She saw how others looked at her mastery even if they
didnt understand that mastery, and she wanted that. This is how her
parents must feel as the famous wizards they were. She would no longer be
just a pretty arial, though she was very beautiful. She would be pretty and
revered for accomplishments and mastery.

Ziv made a decision. She was an Ara'Khree no more. She would fly from this
place. However, before she did so, she forced herself to stand there and
watch. She felt no loss at the destruction of the magical school she had so
loathed. Something about it felt right, felt satisfying. Yet she had a
conscious and forced her thoughts on the non-magical villager Korok and other
friends accidentally killed.

Accident or not, she had burnt her village to the ground, and it was her
penance now to watch it burn to the ground.
