Chapter 2

Death Be Not Proud

The second event was a dramatic increase in the frequency of orc raids.
Communities like hers had always depended on the protection of the
Voralian peacekeepers to hold the orc raiders at bay. Incursions were
rare, and by and large the villgaers regarded the city guard as heroes.
This began to change as the raids came more frequently, and the silence
from the Spire only accelerated the erosion of trust. Please from the
village council fell on deaf ears. The regular patrols still passed
through, but they were not enough to deter the raiders.

It was during one of these raids that Ydane's mother was killed. Her
father was working the fields and Ydane was out in the woods, having
shirked the chores her mother had set her to. Ydane's mother's death
was brutal, but also seemed to have been quick, this particular band of
orcs being more interested in theft than sport. In the days that
followed Ydane withdrew into herself. Her father, on the other hand,
began to lean even more heavily on the bottle, and Ydane was forced to
assume all of the household duties. This wore at her in a way it never
had her mother, and all the more because she knew how much of her toil
was going directly to the local tavern.

So it was that one day she finally snapped, confronting her father about
his sorry state. He, having irrationally blamed Ydane for his wife's
death, responded by savagely beating her and kicking her out of the
house. In truth there was nothing she could have done when the raiders
struck, but the alcohol made him impervious to such logic. They would
be the last words she'd speak to him, who proceeded to drink himself to
death not long after shunning his only child.

Ydane, now on her own for the first time, and with no marketable skills,
did the only thing she could think of and headed to Voralian city to
appeal to the charity of its citizens. Surely in a city of such wealth
and dedication to the Light she could find safe haven?
