Chapter 1

Ignoble beginnings.

Malgren had a troubled childhood.
The son of a mediocre specimen of his race, he was gifted and cursed in
turn to surpass his father's genetics in every conceivable way. Where his
father was short, he was tall; and where his father was inept, he was
talented. Alas, even the most gifted child is but a child, and his father
often would vent his rage at the world upon his son. Malgren wasn't sure
who his mother was, having memories only of his father.
Fortunately for the young Malgren, weak fire giants do not last long in
Galadon. His father met a timely end at the end of an elven blade, and
that was the beginning of life as an orphan.
There were worse places to be an orphan than on the streets of Galadon, but
Malgren's race once more proved his undoing. Standing out was bad. It made
stealing food hard, and the guard immediately took notice of him where
ever he went.
