Chapter 1

His Mercenary Interests
Added Sun Jul 22 15:54:08 2018 at level 14:

As a general rule, arials dislike the water, and Oliopterix Ragplume was no exception,
so when an unscrupulous merchant asked the rogue to haunt the docks of his hometown
and disrupt the sea trade with a few quiet disappearances, Ragplume was happy to take
his money. This, however, set the first stage toward his dislike of magic.

As he was quietly dumping cargo and the occasional body into the sea,
quietly minding his own business, a woman of some means stepped into his
face and demanded to see the manifest for the cargo he was handling. Ragplume
smiled sheepishly, then drove a dagger into her side. For most merchants, that
would have been enough, but this one uttered words in an archaic language
and the rogue was quickly overcome by a mind-splitting headache that completely
incapacitated him.

Eventually, he recovered, but Ragplume's first experience with magic was unpleasant.
His second experience with magic was with a shapechanger who called himself Hoobis,
a veteran in his craft and quite a charming salesman, too. He sold Ragplume a splendid
set of wing-armors for an unbelievable price considering their rarity, and the rogue
was elated until their magic expired with the setting of the sun and crumbled into
dust.

From these two seemingly unrelated, and to others, inconsequential events Oliopterix
Ragplume's perception of magic was irrevocably damaged, and as he traveled Thera
and learned of the terrible devastation wrought by its accidental and intentional use,
magic should be stripped from mortal hands.

Too young to enlist in the army of Battleragers, this arial volunteered to
serve on the supply train or to tend their wounded.
