A Boy Freed

Like his mother, Tamhas would spend his childhood in slavery. But he
would not remain there. While his mother showed strength and fortitude to
survive an unsurvivable situation, Tamhas showed the courage to change
his situation entirely.

Tamhas spent his youth learning to protect himself from the vile men who
called him property. While his mother was the subject of their lust,
Tamhas felt the full force of their rage.

Brave and resilient even at a young age, Tamhas never accepted their
violence easily. While weapons were beyond hope, he learned to fight
bare-handed. While other slaves might succumb and hope for leniency,
Tamhas would never back down from his tormentors. The fights were losing
efforts, without fail, but Tamhas fought still, as he always would.

It was one such occasion that Tamhas finally saw a chance to escape.
After a routine beating, both Tamhas and the slavers were tending their
wounds. But this time was different. The guard watching the perimeter had
to intervene and he, too, was distracted with his own wounds. For a brief
few moments, there was no one watching slaves.

Tamhas, ever vigilant, immediately exploited the brief opening. He and
half a dozen other young slaves snuck away into the treeline. They
escaped without a sound and without notice. They ran, hard but silently
until they found a river. It was the river that would take them to
freedom.

The boys, floating on makeshift rafts, arrived at the Voralian City docks
just as twilight turned to utter darkness. Free and safe, most of the
boys began making arrangements to start their lives or find distant
family members.

Tamhas, always different from the other boys and with no desire for a
quiet life, had other plans. Without explanation or much more than
parting words, Tamhas made his way quietly and directly to the Paladin's
guild.
