Gemmurra DarkCrown the Heroine of Faith, Voice of the Scarab, Anathema to the Empire

Description

Extending just about five feet, she looks tall by duergar standards,
especially considering her thin ebony-skinned frame. The matching
dark eyes of obsidian black seem always in motion, seemingly always
looking out for danger about her. Looking a bit closer, you notice
numerous scars marking her skin, some old and some obviously newer.
The shortly cut hair and very short beard provide an unexpected
dash of bright white on the otherwise fully dark figure.
The thin features of her face match the slender arms and legs,
with her nose almost a beak with its sharpness.
Unusual for her kind, the elongated neck emphasizes the feeling
of something off about her face. While obviously not pretty, it
could have been somewhat attractive, but somehow it would never
be called anything close to that. A certain unpleasant aura seems
to exude from the creature and it is quite clear she is not out
to make any friends in the world.

The Blind need guidance in this world and thus I seek to spread the Truth
among them. I speak to the youngsters and although most insist to stay Profane,
some eyes can be opened and for them I can become the Father's Voice.
There are those who are too far gone on their path of ignorance and
their eyes need to be Opened, but they mostly scatter away in terror of the Truth.
Alas, they cannot run away forever and Gemmurra will Open their eyes.
The progression on the Path of learning and Truth cannot be stopped.

In her travels, Gemmurra came upon the knowledge that the most powerful
Lich has a small following in a temple far to the east. His preachings
of Truth and Destruction appeal to her very much and their goals seem to
be aligned in the reliance on self and despise for conquering empires,
be it the blind who build out the Fortress or the blind slaves who dwell
upon and try to survive the local empire.
Gemmurra has resolved to make a life out of dedicated service to the Temple and the Lich.

When Gemmurra was striving through Galadon, among the grandeur of the city,
she noticed something strange. There was a man shouting into the crowd, his
voice seemingly reverberating through the whole city. What he promised seemed
off to her, as he promised untold riches and protection within the so-called
Empire. Speaking to others, she learnt that this empire seeked to usurp power
for its own gain and indeed is known for oppressing even their own citizens,
nevermind the untold mindless killings they bestow upon all others.
Completely rejecting this path of oppression, she slapped the Recruiter and tried
to refute his lies in front of the crowd and proudly pronounced herself an Anathema to it.

Chapter 1

Background

The Underlands of Sma'aor are virtually unknown to Upsiders, vast cave networks running
under the East Continent. The duergar within were ruled by the three Crowns for millennia.
The CrimsonCrown to protect Sma'aor from intrusion and from enemies within, the GoldCrown
to oversee the vast mining and processing operations and trade with the Upsiders and, last
but certainly not least, the DarkCrown to research and practice divine rituals and magic.

Gemmurra DarkCrown, inheriting her house at youth due to the sudden demise of her parents
in a tunnel collapse, was of limited knowledge and experience. She was groomed to be a
proper DarkCrown, slowly learning the dark rituals required, but was just a beginner on
The Path, just starting to feel the dark energy, necessary pre-requisite to channel it.
Sleeping uneasily one slumbertime, she was hastily awakened by the trusted guards.
Hushing her questions and protests, she was ushered out of Crown House and told that the
GoldCrown House was just overtaken with Crimson and that the attack was imminent.

Apparently, as she later learned, Tuella CrimsonCrown thought it would be at her advantage
to consolidate power and money under her own wing and pronounce herself an Empress of Sma'aor.
Many a DarkCrown have lost their lives, but the resistance was rather futile as the Crimson
has prepared rather well for the coup by centuries of fighting and soon Gemmurra found herself
being hunted by the Crimson, her protectors being only a small and disappearing contingent
of Dark, who each gave their life to protect Gemmurra, but to limited avail.

As her last advisor and council, Sni'a DarkCrown, was a rather knowledgeable woman, helping
to prod Gemmurra on The Path, but seeing little progress, sent Gemmurra Upside, to learn and
fend on her own as enemies were closing in. Collapsed tunnel behind Gemmurra, the fate of
Sni'a unknown, Gemmurra climbed to the catacombs beneath Arkham to find herself in a strange world
inhabited by a variety of creatures she's never seen. Barely four decades old, seeing what
the strive for empire can bring, and forcibly self-reliant, she does not trust anyone,
resolving to instead progress on The Path by herself, with the hope of finding
someone powerful enough to help her along. One thing she found helpful on The Path is to never
speak a lie, lest one be caught up in a web of them and thus she would forever only speak the
Truth as she believes it, for the learning can only come from true understanding.
