A figure covered in thick, flowing robes of dark brown stands before you. His
light blue eyes look out from beneath the cowl with a careful alertness. He
appears to stand straight to a height of six feet despite the bulk, though it
would be hard to tell if he is slouching beneath the masking coverage. A few
pouches and bags hang from a thin belt of rope that is doubled around his
waist. Flashes of tanned skin show on his hands and neck as he moves with a

Contemplations

I often spent the time during my rests contemplating my entrenchment in
honesty, what had set me apart from the empire and brought me in to the
Fortress. It was during times when asked of my allegiance that these
thoughts were often re-iterated to me, when it would have been easier to lie
and mask my intentions than tell them the truth and gain an enemy aware of
me. I found myself telling the truth, as anything else would not have been
who I was.

At the same time I did not go out to every dark and evil heart and scream to
them that I was going to keeping them away from the light. I struck them to
remove the threat for others. I had heard the priests speak of Doermdel, the
God of Balance and Honesty. I often wandered if he would embrace the way I
was living, this ultimate embodiment of Truth and Honesty. I often had
thoughts of searching for them to learn more, but still found myself working
hard to push myself to be the best I could be. Perhaps that person would
be best with a God's insight? This thought was one that my mind could not
let go.

I had thought I would be intimated by the Marshall, and to some degree I had
been. The overwhelming sense of home overrode all other emotions when he
summoned me within the walls for our introduction. The thick walls were a
monument to what people who work together could build, and it was awe
inspiring. I was quickly able to impress Sirelas with my scouting abilities
and soon found myself as squire, ready to work to prove myself further.

It was after reading the library that I found myself truly relaxed and at
peace. The words there encouraged the duties of the squire, but also warned
about the hardships and trials. It was not going to be easy to walk the line,
to be the Light between the rest of the world and the darkness that tried to
consume it. It was a line I would strive to be on the right side on, as it
was my duty and my calling.

Truth

As Xisaer grew into his teenage years, he began to see that the darkness and
vile behavior around him grew off of one constant - lies. Without the lies,
they would not be able to manipulate and destroy each other while still
pretending to be friends and allies. He had long become convinced that
there could be nothing gained here, that everything they built at one moment
was crumbled through betrayal the next. The day when he would have to take
the bloodoath quickly approached. He had often tried to leave, but it is
easier to stay in the familiar than brave the new. This was no longer much
of an option, as he was now being followed. His mother would not risk losing
her son, even if he lacked the ruthlessness she embodied.

It was on a normal day while he watched his mother's rival in the black sect
that he found his opportunity. A large contingent of members of the 'vile'
Fortress had came to reclaim their orb. He watched in awe as they fought as
one unit, pushing together to reclaim their orb. In particular, one holy man
stood and waited until they had all been sent home before disappearing in a
white light. He saw everything he had been achingly missing without ever
knowing. He immediately walked away quietly in the shadows, never looking
back over his shoulder.

He found himself in the holy Voralian City. Seeing the right reasons to
fight, he finally had motivation to learn and be more than a seeing shadow.
He began studying underneath a master martial artist, and was soon earning
more than the free bread that was passed about to the needy.

Chapter 1

Lies

The air around his mother, Gwenyth, darkened to his eye as she spoke to the
blade she was manipulating. This happened more and more around her, as if
he could see the poison of her words take form. Her large bossom was on
display and the fool was distracted enough to fall for her words. Another
victory for the devious necromancer as she sent the blade after a shadow for
no real reason at all.

As he left, she turned to him and he tensed and grew very alert. Her words
were never clear lies to him. Instead they always aimed to manipulate him to
do whatever she desired at that time, often spying or menial tasks. Today
she simply turned away and went about her own matters. He breathed a quiet
sigh of relief. He had taken to the shadows naturally, and she was grooming
him to one day be the Shadow Lord. It would almost appear as if she wanted
the best for him, yet in reality she wished him there to have firm control of
one of the seats of the council to mount the throne. The pathway she took
involved lying, cheating, killing, bribing, or fucking anyone that stood in
her way. Though that last was a dangerous ploy, as his father could attest.
As soon as she had got him positioned properly, she had lied to get him made
anathema then killed him.

Xisaer still saw him for quite a while though, as Gwenyth had raised him and
set him to the most menial of tasks. This mostly involved watching Xisaer as
a youth.
