Description

This wild elf is covered in bits of mud and organic debris. His hair is like
a muddy waterfall - a series of mats and clumps cascading down his back.
Elvish ears emerge from the mess. His eyes seem keen and his lithe body seems
toned. He moves with refined elvish grace, and while a tragic intelligence
haunts his twilight-colored eyes, an oddly childlike spark lurks within their
depths. Among the packs and weapons he hauls is a tiny, wooden marionette
with an odd grin on its face. He carries himself with a sort of puffed-up
dignity that is somewhat at odds with his vagabond-like appearance, as though
he were a stranger in a strange land. Or just strange.

Chapter 8

A marionette show.

After the Knight delivered unto Akresius an unholy weapon, Akresius made good
on His bargain: Souls for a soul.

The Imperator tore away the soul of the child, at last setting the Knight
free from his fears and distractions. The moment of the separation was
painful - sad, even. But the resulting freedom has made the Knight happy
beyond belief.

Erighan at last is truly a Knight. Or, at least, the last traces of the lie
have been obliterated by divine force. The scared child, gone forever, and
his invention, a perfect version of himself, is all that remains.

The Knight has all but forgotten about the boy. His dreams are his own, his
body is his own, his mind is his own.

One recent night, the Knight had a peculiar dream.

The sound of laughing children filled the forest. As he neared its source, he
saw an older wood-elven man performing a marionette show. Sylvan children
gathered around him to watch him bring to life wooden dolls - a valiant
knight and an evil sorcerer. One child in the crowd wasn't laughing like the
others were. His eyes were wide with wonder, his mouth agape in an awed
smile.

Then he was gone.

Chapter 7

The boy wakes.

The Knight has been at war with young Erighan, who has until now slept
dormant, content to hide from the trauma of his father's death and allow the
Knight to live in his stead.

And so the Knight, a living lie who despises untruth, has sought the help of
Akresius to carve away the boy in hopes of becoming a truly genuine being.

It did not go well.

The Imperator of the Sanguine Chalice has woken the boy, and the Knight is
terrified that the child is trying to take back control of his body.

The Knight now searches for ways to dispose of the boy before it's too late.
Oddly, the concept of reconciling with the boy has not yet crossed the
Knight's mind, perhaps because he sees the child as foreign, or a figment of
his own imagination.

Chapter 6

Existence.

Does the Knight truly exist?

In truth, Erighan remains a child at his core - the same scared and sad child
who witnessed the aftermath of his father's slaying. But the Knight he has
created and controls, like one of his father's marionettes, has become a true
knight of renown.

The Knight has grown to command the Village of the Battleragers, among the
most feared warriors in Thera. He has a reputation of nobility, honor and
Valour.

The Knight despises lies. He hates deception and fraud. Perhaps it's
Erighan's attempt to make his illusion more convincing. Or perhaps it's the
Knight's truly held belief, and the illusion has crossed the line of fantasy
and become reality.

But Erighan knows that the Knight is nothing but a lie. A huge lie, composed
of intricate and moving pieces. A lie that has form and life and meaning. A
lie that has given hope and inspiration to some, and frustration and fear to
others.

A lie that, by most measures, is more alive than Erighan is.

Does Erighan truly exist?

Chapter 5

The knighting ceremony.

Erighan, or the knight he is pretending to be, has taken a solemn oath in the
ruins of the once-great city that he is pretending to be from. He considers
his vow to Tahren to be a Knighting Ceremony.

There is no sinister intent behind his pursuit of a place within the Village.
It has arisen naturally through his embrace of his false persona. Erighan is
becoming fully engulfed in his melodramatic and quixotic fantasy, though he
remains aware of the absurdity of it all.

He enjoys it when people play along, as it gives him a sense of power and
control over them - he is pulling their strings.

He frequently casts bizarre accusations at undeserving people. But the fact
that they are so outlandish gives him a way to test others: Can their strings
be pulled? Will they humor him? Or will they risk offending his artificially
puffed-up sense of dignity and Honor?

He is truthfully somewhat indifferent in the war against magic. But his false
persona is entirely on board. Not even Erighan is entirely certain which is
true. And that's just how he likes it.

Chapter 4

SUMMARY and explanation.

Erighan was a neglected child who had a rich internal life, and he was driven
even deeper within himself by the trauma of witnessing his single,
marionette-selling father's gruesome murder.

He has a habit of talking to inanimate objects. It's often safer than talking
to animate ones. He dances with marionettes and has conversations with them.
It makes them happy. He'd probably do the same with dolls. He also has
violent impulses that would need to come out over time.

He is wildly delusional, but not stupid.

On some level, he knows the difference between fantasy and reality. But he
likes the comfort of his fantasy and would rather drag others into his
fantasy than meet them in reality.

According to him, he has traveled to modern Thera from the past, where he was
a swordsman for Galadon whose strict sense of honor was assaulted by an Ogre
mage. The story will most likely evolve over time.

Often, Erighan will be in-character, speaking in a knightly tone that might
seem bizarre coming from a wood-elf.

There is actually no specific reason for the deception, except for whatever
internal benefits he gets out of it. Perhaps on some level, he's deceiving
himself - a protective mechanism to shield his scarred psyche.

Or, perhaps on some other level, it might just be that he's turning Therans
into his beloved marionettes, pulling strings just to make himself happy.

Chapter 3

Not hanging around.

They told me I could watch them kill the killer. There were three hanging
executions that day. The man who killed my father died first and it was fast.

Thunk, snap, creak.

The one after him was a necromancer and he kicked really hard and turned
colors. Something deep inside of me turned on. I felt like an animal watching
a wounded gazelle run. I wanted to chase it. I wanted to leap on the
wriggling necromancer on the rope and punch and pound and tear and bite. Then
he stopped moving and I felt sad I wasn't there for it.

The third one went fast. I felt disappointed.

Adults' concerned frowns decorated my life like tapestries decorate rooms.

Reconnecting with the wilds would brighten me up, they said. They told me it
would be best if I played outside. Maybe they just wanted to get rid of me.

Anyway, I played outside. I made believe that I was a time traveler and that
I was leaving Evermoon for good. I made believe so hard that I escaped the
trees and scaled a mountain and crossed the plains and was among the cities
of man.

I made believe so hard that I made everyone else believe it, too.

Chapter 2

Pulling the strings.

Daddy's marionettes are beautiful. Their faces look like ours would if the
elder gods weren't so clumsy.

He made them all from wood. I was his first creation of flesh. Mommy helped a
little, but then she left me with him. She is free somewhere. She is running
fast through fields and gulping air, smelling moss and leaves in faraway
forests and lying in the grass watching the sunlight filter blood-orange
through her eyelids.

Meanwhile Daddy just carves in Evermoon. The marionettes are just dead little
things. Beautiful dead little things. He doesn't give them life. He doesn't
make them dance. He doesn't know how or want to know how. He gave me life and
that was more than enough for him. The little wooden ones, he just sells
them.

A strange man came by Daddy's stand and looked angry. They had an argument
and Daddy threatened the man with a knife. The man walked away but kept
looking back, looking mad.

At night I woke up tied to my bed and Daddy screamed. Then he went quiet and
the strange man dragged him into the room. He tied ropes around him and
hoisted him up to the rafters and tied it off on the leg of my bed. He made
Daddy into a marionette. Dancing, dangling, swinging. Still face, like wood.
Glass eyes staring down at me. Wad of paper in his mouth. Arms reaching,
tracing circles around my face.

When the guards found me they said I was safe because that kind of criminal
doesn't go after children. It was business. I asked what business was and
they just kept talking to each other. They gave me one of Daddy's marionettes
and put me in another room. They told me they'd find me a new family or maybe
just put me to work.

I played in my new room. I couldn't make Daddy move again, but I made my
marionette move. I love how it dances.

It makes me really happy.

"I know."

"Of course I know. You're pulling my strings after all."

In Evermoon Hollow, a little wood-elf boy named Erighan and a marionette
whirled through a room around a flickering candle.

I love how you dance.

"Why, thank you."

You don't understand. It really makes me happy.

"I know."

How do you know?

"Of course I know. You're pulling my strings after all."

Would you know if I'm sad?

"Yes. Because you don't pull my strings when you're sad."

So if I want to stay happy, I need to keep pulling your strings?

"I suppose so."

The door opened with a whoosh and the candle died. A guard's torch lit the
boy's face and revealed the marionette's smile. The guard had a man's voice.

"BOY."

The guard whispered but it boomed in the boy's ears.

"WE ALL ACHE FOR YOU. ALL THE GUARDS. JUSTICE WILL BE DONE. WE PROMISE. THE
WORLD ISN'T ALL LIKE THAT. YOU'LL SEE..."

The hall echoed with other footsteps and the guard stopped talking and left
the boy and the marionette and the dead candle in the dark.
