Chapter 11

A family among the village.

As she sat overlooking the railing of the Maiden, Salyeris took a moment for
herself. Often did she visit the ship of Lady Neltouda, to find a place of
calm amongst the tempest that was life leading the Battleragers. It had ever
been an oddity to her that unlike most Battleragers, she harbored no rage or
hatred within her. And yet still she fought with every ounce of herself for
the cause of the Battleragers, to see the war through to it's end, or her
own.

She was slow to anger, and quick to calm, perhaps a virtue of her advancing
age. She had always attempted to be stern, but with a soft touch, so that the
Battleragers always knew why she acted as she did towards them. It was an odd
sensation to her, to have so many she felt the need to watch over. At times
she saw them more as the children she had never born, and looked over them as
a mother would. She taught what she could, aided them through their
struggles, and protected them with her own life, with no greater pride coming
then from their successes far more than any of her own.

That realization was nothing new, for she had always desired a family, but
her dedication to the Battleragers has likely closed that path to her, for
the toils of war would seldom permit the idle life she had once envisioned, a
life blessed with children of her own. And yet, at the same time, it had
given her what she sought, a family of her own. She would fight to the end to
protect that family, and all those within it, and she would suffer none who
would bring it harm, be they enemies from the outside, or those who would
weaken the Battleragers from within.
