Faeghn the Salty Swashbuckler, Touched by the Tempest, MageSlayer

Description

This duergar male's puffed-out chest and proud carriage make him stand out:
though only standing about four and a half feet, his muscled arms,
shoulders and ship-shape clothing (even though often rumpled and bloodstained
from storms, water, or battle) cut a striking figure. Coal black eyes squint
in the presence of light, and constantly scan the horizon beneath thick,
salt-crusted brows. His black hair is pulled back into a tight ponytail,
sometimes tucked beneath his hat, otherwise swinging wildly during travel and
battle. His dusky skin appears weathered and rough, obviously exposed often
to sun, wind, and salt-spray. His jawline is strong, and his jutting chin
naturally draws the eye, though it, along with the rest of his face, is
meticulously clean-shaven. He is uncommonly attractive, his strong brow,
searching eyes, prominent nose, and the manly cut of his jaw presenting a
strong warrior's face to the world. He wears a fighter's garb: armor coated
with leather and oiled heavily to a dark sheen, spare weapons, a wide-brimmed
oiled leather hat, and a large coil of thick rope on his pack. Towards the
top of his chest armor you notice a sparkling cloud peeking out, flickering
with the power of the storm as faint blue tendrils of electricity crawl over
his breastplate, crackle erratically over the surrounding skin of his chest,
up his neck, and over toward his arms.

Faeghn's Past
Added Sun Aug 2 13:58:37 2009 at level 1:

Mortorn, the great war between duergar an dwarves, a story repeated in time
over, and over, and over again. The beginnings of Faeghn aren't overly
important, the story could be told by anyone. Born in the underdark,
recruited forcefully for the war, trained in the ways of battle formations,
used as fodder against dwarves. Faeghns life truly began to be interesting
when he was captured by a dwarven squadron. Dwarves may not take prisoners,
but war is expensive. A number of captured duergar and drow, no kobolds or
goblins, were immediately put into slave pens and marched through the
underdark, up and out of secret tunnels, and sold into slavery for war funds.

Faeghn was one such example. After his march he was forced into the light of
day. He'll never forget the moment he was shoved into the burning heat,
stumbling over his shackles. He swore his eyes must be smoking, his whole
body seemed aflame. He grew reaccustomed to the routine of being jostled
around by glaring overseers with whips. As he had done in the underdark, he
kept his head down and stayed out of trouble, making sure to keep the fiery
glint of rebellion from his features lest he serve as an example to the
others. After a long journey down a river and to the ocean, he ended up in a
slave market in a city he was unfamiliar with. As he was walked through the
city he took in strange and new sights between the lashes of the whip, he saw
many things that he was awestruck over. Shiny weapons, gleaming pots and
pans, intricate tapestries, woven baskets, and smells of food vendors that
hed have given his right hand at the time to sample a bite.

The smells of the slave market were not so pleasant, but as he had worked up
quite a bit of muscle over his journeys and training, he did not spend much
time there. He was purchased by a cloaked and hooded figure which had the
stature of a drow. His instinct was correct. He was taken aboard a pitch
black sloop and shoved below decks. With his chains off his first instinct
once alone with his new 'master' in the cargo hold was to fight. This was a
bad idea. His head felt like it exploded off of his neck, his skin felt like
it was being cut by thousands of razors and rubbed with loads of salt. He had
heard of magic and wizards before, and he swore from that moment on he would
do everything he could to prevent that sort of thing from happening again
without just cause. He grew accustomed to the rigors and duties of a ship
slave, and was thankful that everyone on board seemed to be as wary of the
sun as he was, most of the sailing was done at night. Faeghn grew to enjoy
the darkness and mystery of the ocean, the thousands of stars in the sky, and
the adventures and dangers associated with sailing the high seas. He never
forgot at the end of each day that he was a slave, and that he wanted his
freedom.

Faeghn's Past II
Added Sun Aug 2 14:00:32 2009 at level 1:

The two mages that ran the ship seemed to know what they were about. They
never wasted any energy or effort that they could place on someone else, and
they kept morale low with effective pain and superiority. Faeghn was always
wary when they focused attention on him, so he tried to keep his head down
and pretend to be dumber than he actually was. At times the wizards would be
joined by other mages, meeting in out of the way islands for days at a time.
On one such occasion all the crew were brought to land and told to go about
their business but return at sunrise. Faeghn knew that escape was impossible
in such a remote location and the thought didnt cross his mind. However, he
did decide to follow the mages to see what they were about. What followed
would alter the course of his life forever.

A very powerful magic created by a conclave of mages. There were at least
ten, all hooded and cloaked in black robes. He was fairly certain they knew
he was there, though he was hiding in the foliage. He felt like a fly on the
wall, insignificant as an insect. There was little discussion among the
mages, but they all seemed to be working in concert, slowly beginning to
chant in unison around some sort of pillar that Faeghn hadnt noticed until
it began to glow with a dull red light. The night sky darkened as ominous
clouds blotted the stars out of the sky. Giant flashes of lightning crashed
all around the island, their deafening booms making Faeghn hunker down a
little lower in his hiding spot. Suddenly the mages stopped chanting and
looked upwards, the air hummed with raw energy and Faeghns skin began to
itch. He followed the gazes of the mages up towards the sky, and did a double
take as he noticed a thin sliver of green cutting like a knife across the
black clouds. In its wake the clouds parted until they formed an open hole
that did not reflect the stars above, but rather an even darker absence of
light. The storm was growing furious all around the perimeter of the circle,
and Faeghn noticed entire trees being thrown about like so many toothpicks
under the force of the gale. A piercing scream that felt as if it would
shatter his brain forced him to cover his ears and drew his attention back
towards the portal. A clawed hand of giant proportions reached through, brown
scaled fingers ending in giant talons. The hand was drawn back into the
portal, and a single eye, glowing a bright orange settled its gaze on the
mages. Faeghn had never known such terror. The eye was then replaced with an
image. It was almost a direct reflection of the island below, but where there
were ten mages now, there were a thousand mages in the image. The image
changed to a vision of the great beast coming out of the now enlarged portal,
followed by hundreds of smaller similar looking creatures. Cities were shown
burning and the ten mages leading hoards of demons throughout various parts

of the world. Faeghn glanced down at the mages and realized by the way some
had giant grins, some had looks of terror, while others had angry glares,
that they were all seeing different things. He looked back up at the portal
and noticed himself in chains behind hundreds of others while the mages
looked on with a smug grin on their faces. Suddenly their grins faded to
grimaces, the sky in the image opened up again, only this time nothing was
coming out of the portal, but buildings and people were being sucked in.
Entire landscapes were turning in on themselves, the oceans were swallowed
up, the world was ripped apart to its very core until it winked out of
existence. With a final boom the clouds closed back in on themselves, the
mages were knocked to the ground, and Faeghn knew he had to be dead. He woke
up in a city being yelled at by a city guard to move along. He still has no
idea how he got there.

What he did know was that he had been given a vision, and the fury of the storm had
inspired him to do everything he could to prevent it from coming to pass.

Faeghn the Defender
Added Sat Aug 8 09:12:46 2009 at level 31:

Faeghn spent the better part of three months trying to decide what had happened with his past.
He wasn't sure if he dreamt everything about the slavery and his past life, or if it had actually
happened. He wasn't sure if divine inspiration had granted him the vision of the world ending, or if he
was just looney. He looked into the subject of portals and rifts and magic briefly and heard of various
cities throughout the world that had been destroyed by magic, Maethin, Azuremain, old Voralian City..

The fact of the matter was, the thought of getting sucked into a portal and the unknown and very likely
dying in the process did not appeal to him. He would take his visions and assume the best of them, that he
himself had indeed had a divine vision, and that it was up to him to prevent such magics from ocurring.

After further research, he learned of the BattleRagers, haters of magic. Faeghn could not think of a better
place to plot the destruction of magic and wizards. He heard various dogma about magic belonging to the
Gods, and magic being too pure for mortals, magic being corrupted when used on this plane by mortals,
magic corrupting the souls of mortals who wield it....he agreed with all of it.

So. Destruction of Magic. He began to observe the village as a whole, and saw Berserkers ripping through
their foes with mighty blows of death. He was amazed at the pure power behind the individuals. He knew he
himself could become such. A pure fury, a storm incarnate. However, he got to thinking. Alone, he could kill
at least a hundred mages, easily as a berserker. But what if he could support ten berserkers who could kill
a hundred mages a piece? What if he could prolong the life of other villagers? Wouldn't doing such have
a greater impact on the destruction of magic? Instead of one stormy individual, a whole hurricane of
obliteration with the singular purpose of death and doom. Yeah, that sounded appealing. He became a defender.

Neltouda's Striker, a Shocking Experience
Added Sun Aug 16 06:47:30 2009 at level 35:

It was when Faeghn first joined the village that he began to hear the call of
the sea. He hadn't given it much thought since he decided to devote himself
to the village. Once establishing himself there, though, he remembered the
whispers and familiarity of the storm itself. He had heard, in his travels,
of a goddess who apparently was the embodiment of the storm itself. He was
very interested in seeking her out. He talked to her mortal Corsair and was
hesitant. The Corsair wasnt a mage, but he wasn't a warrior, he didn't have
a demeanor that demanded respect. One would think that a near Avatar of a
Goddess would at least exhibit some attributes of power and command. At any
rate, he learned from the Corsair that the Goddess herself had a fancy for
treasure, but not only treasure, moreso the tales that come with the treasure
itself about how it was gained. Now, in his journies, Faeghn learned to
respect one thing, an individuals ability to handle himself with a blade.
Faeghn thought and thought of the various baubles and trinkets he had come
across in the wholesale slaughter of wizards, and came up short when trying
to think of something to give a Goddess. Eventually he decided that he would
do something that would possibly turn her head, WHILE giving her an item of
great power. It just so happened that he heard of an event held at an inn
that celebrated the Goddess herself, and he could think of no better time to
give her his gift. So then, a time before the event, he trekked down to the
Chasm of the Scions, and though he only had thirty two titles from his
guildmaster, he took the Ebony Scepter so that he might have tribute for his
Goddess.

The event at the inn proved to be disastrous. He walked into the place and
was immediately taken aback by the lack of worshipers who had showed to pay
homage to what he was hoping to make his own Goddess. He took some
satisfaction in the Chancellor of Scion's glare as he gave the Scepter to his
Goddess with feigned indifference. He told her he would tell her the tale of
such at a later time, as he didn't wish to disrupt her event. As he began to
pay attention to those around him his annoyance grew and grew. He took this
time to observe, and was taken aback at the things he saw. Here were the
Goddess of the Storms greatest mortal followers, dancing about, giggling,
mimicking and mocking the Goddess herself by repeating her maneurisms
horribly. No storm is alike, lightning doesnt strike the same place twice(so
he thought at the time), this was just offensive. A crowd had gathered by
this time, the majority were sniggering and pointing at these followers, some
outright laughing. Faeghn himself couldnt sit and watch the event, opting to
leave when he became bored to hunt a mage or two. On his journies, he began
to ask questions about these followers of others, hearing on multiple
occasions about these Heralds and their ridiculous weakness of both physical

and mental prowess. Apparently anyone seen as a deckhand or stowaway of the
Goddess's crew was seen as such. Faeghn understood that all energy and effort
he had put towards making a name and image for himself would be negated as
soon as he took an image that associated himself with these ridiculously
absurd individuals. He began to doubt the storm's power then, and though he
knew it was the right path for his life to take, though he knew by riding the
storm to its fullest he would inspire those around him with his life, he
didn't want to risk lumping himself into the category of these other
worshippers. He went back to life as normal, paying silent tribute to the
Goddess.

Faeghn may have walked away from the storm, but apparently the storm wasn't
finished with Faeghn. Faeghn was so focused on bringing his war to mages and
grumbling at the sight of storm worshippers that he failed to notice the
mysterious appearance of silver tankards of ale over the course of a few
weeks. It was on one particularly grueling and tiresome battle against a
giant komodo dragon, one where Faeghn refused to admit he was overmatched and
waited for an opportunity to present itself that might lead to the dragons
demise, when his heart felt full of the inspiriation of past memories and
nearly burst with the prideful feeling. From the thunder and lightning
associated with the feeling he knew he had gained the attention of the
Goddess once more. He set out at once to her ship, and with a great
hesitation explained the revelations he had about her worshippers. He had to
admit to himself that when alone with the Captain of the vessel and Goddess
of the storms, he enjoyed the time and took wisdom from the conversation. But
as he gazed around the ship, and thought about an eternity of sailing from
one misadventure to the other with the deckhands and crewmates he would take
in..he knew he wouldn't be in her favor for long because he would have to cut
all of them down to be content with the afterlife. The Goddess explained
something that made sense to him, though. If he wanted others to worship and
do the storm justice, the best way was to lead by example. Faeghn agreed then
to attempt this task, as long as he wasnt lumped in with the others to lose
the respect of his fellows. He thought he had explained his dillema enough,
but as soon as someone sniggered at him and called him a 'Stowaway' he got
irate. He said some things that mortals shouldn't say to a Goddess, and was
struck multiple times with lightning. Although it was great pain, he was glad
to see that she was willing to be furious and let her rage spill forth. He
felt that if this became a habit she wouldn't have to worry about soft
followers. And yet at the same time, he felt the Goddess didn't understand
his dillema, and that he would rather pay silent tribute to the storm in his
own way than waste her time with constant belligerence and end up cursed

forever to boot. However, after a few more bolts of lightning and a good
conversation, the Goddess granted Faeghn a position separate from the rest,
for better or worse. Neltouda's Striker. When others ask him, he explains
that anyone who speaks down about the Goddess or brings her displeasure has
to deal with him, although he knows the truth of the matter is closer to him
being Neltoudas personal lightning rod. He was tasked with inspiring his
allies to great heights and discussing the methods of doing so with the
Goddess, and he expects he will have a series of such tasks in the future,
likely to teach him to inspire everyone as a whole, enemies as well. He is
content with his lot right now, and hopes to ride the storm wherever it might

Taken by the Storm
Added Mon Aug 24 19:55:32 2009 at level 51:

What a change. The life of the storm has truly taken Faeghn now. He lives to
inspire others to be better individuals, be they friend or foe. He attempts
to live his life to its fullest and always push onward, no matter how rough
times can get. He was hoping that by now the village would be in a better
place, and is dissapointed that he hasn't been able to motivate the populace
to fill in the huts, but keeps his hopes up for the future. He tries not to
do anything half-assed, he fights as hard as he can, and he pushes himself to
his own limits and beyond, often falling in his attempts to destroy what he
still believes will be the worlds undoing. He attempts to respect his
enemies, and face them with courage and charisma, bringing a positive image
to the village war. When he is discouraged it is fairly obvious, these stormy
moments are usually short-lived but can prove to have an impact on him, often
shaking his faith in himself and his beliefs.

When he gave himself to the storm he had no idea how taken he would be by its
physical manifestation of divinity, Neltouda. At first he only heard rumors and
whispers of her, then he began to research her crew and beliefs. He brought a
gift to her at an inn event, and was disheartened at the image portrayed
therein by her crew as well as her public face when dealing with them.
However, though he had given up on that aspect of the storm, Neltouda wasn't
done with him. Faeghn saw her, at first, as a weak fop, incapable of leading
his spirit to newfound heights, frilly, and full of merriment and jolliness
and little else. When conveying these feelings, however, he evoked a side
that he hadn't known existed, a powerful and furious chaos that came from the
very heart of the storm. He tested her will, battering and butting until he
was a writhing mass of spikes and electricity, strike after strike after
strike. Here he found a will that matched if not surpassed his own, here he
found inspiration to strengthen himself and fight harder, a new respect for
the divine. Here as well, he found love. He, a duergar, found love. A deep
seated, unsettling, fear inspiring love that shook him to his very core. What
does it mean to love a God? To live and breathe for the moments shared
between each other? How does he show the feelings that seem so unnatural? The
feelings that if voiced would make him feel a lesser being? Where is his
murderous intent and history? Why does he no longer enjoy the murder of all?
Mages, yes, but he used to kill for killing's sake. In giving himself to the
storm, he has inherited much of the storm into himself. The badness
associated with most duergar seems to have been washed away, the inherent
wickedness and evil intent drowned and purified for something better. He
doesn't like to reflect on these changes, and he doesn't speak of them.

He doesn't seek redemption, he doesn't feel he's ever done anything wrong and
does not see the world in Light and Darkness.

He lives in and for the moment. A stolen kiss, a loving pulse of tenderness
from the storm that was literally seared onto his heart. The spark in the
eyes of those that he himself inspired to truly live, filling their sails
with the wind of the storm. The death of a mage, the saving of a brother in
battle. The sound of the laughter that drives him wild with desire. The
feeling of merriment and revelry that he once considered anathema to his
beliefs. The love of his Goddess.
