Any time you modify a work, the changes are yours, unless you explicitly give the rights back to the original authors. We were neither expected nor required to do so.
Again, if DIKU called us tomorrow and wanted to publish our code, we can very legally say "No.". That said, we do obey the letter and spirit of all applicable licenses, and always have. If we didn't, they could theoretically revoke our right to use the work, but they still couldn't publish or use our version.
